Alpina Extreme Diver

Alpina have released their ‘Extreme Diver’, replete with suitable action shots (is a beach ‘extreme’?).

It’s a 44mm stainless steel piece, water resistant to a dive-worthy 300m.

Movement is the automatic caliber AL-525 – based on a Selita movement.  This has 26 jewels, a power reserve of 42 hours and a black PVD rotor.

You’ll have the choice of a black rubber strap, a metal bracelet or a mesh bracelet.

Do you like ‘open’ date indicators?  Not super keen myself.  The mesh version looks ok though.

What do you think?

Alpina Manufacture Aviation Rose Gold

Model boats are so last hour darling!

All the cool kids are now getting watches with model planes instead :-)

[Press Release] In celebration of the Fifth Anniversary its Manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Swiss Watch Manufacturer Alpina Genève is proud to introduce a beautiful Pilot Manufacture watch in 18K Rose Gold.

The Alpina Startimer Pilot Collection is a highly attractive range of contemporary timepieces, inspired by original Alpina designs from the 1920s and 30s.

During two decades, Alpina Watch International was known as a specialized manufacturer and official supplier of military watches, utilized by pilots. These early aviation pioneers had strict requirements: their instruments had to be extremely precise and provide ultimate shock resistance. In addition, Alpina pilot’s watches were mostly equipped with an anti-magnetic case, a high-contrast dial with oversized luminous numerals and luminous hands for instant readability.

The clean design of this timepiece was clearly inspired by Alpina’s past: a generous 44 mm, anti-reflective satin-finished 18K Rose Gold case, mat black dial with oversized white luminous numerals, a glare-free sapphire crystal and a signature red Alpina-triangle on the second hand are the key features.

To further improve user-friendliness and comfort, an original solution was found to secure the leather strap: it closes on the front side of the wrist, not on the reverse or lower sides, hereby resembling the vintage leather straps of the past. A newly designed metal bracelet is available too, and fits on all versions.

The movement is designed and developed entirely in the manufacture’s workshops in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, and features an automatic winding mechanism incorporating Alpina’s trademark rotor – a salute to Straub & Co., the designers of Alpina’s first automatic calibre of 1945, cal. 582. After considerable investments in technical know-how and, most importantly, a highly motivated team of experts, Alpina’s ambition of manufacturing a new bespoke in-house calibre was accomplished. As with all Alpina mechanical timepieces, the finely decorated movement is visible through a transparent case back.

In support of the important new Startimer collection, Alpina Genève has proudly joined forces with Cessna Aircraft and PrivatAir. Alpina Geneve, Cessna Aircraft and PrivatAir work together closely to promote their equally high quality products and services, through cross-marketing activities in Europe and North America.

The Alpina Startimer Pilot will be presented in a dedicated, luxurious packaging, alongside a Cessna Citation Mustang scale model in PrivatAir livery.

Alpina Sailing Collection Chronograph

How cool is this?

Alpina’s new Sailing Collection Chrono comes with its own little boat :-)

The piece was produced in conjunction with the Niceforyou Extreme 40 Racing Team and its their boat represented by the included model.

Fantastic :-)

As for the watch, the 44mm case is in stainless steel. It has a sapphire crystal, a display back and is water resistant to 300 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic Alpina caliber AL-880 (base Sellita 550) with yacht timer function and PVD black coated Alpina rotor. Functions are: hours, minutes, seconds, yacht timer function.

Dials can be had in black or white with large white luminous indices and white luminous hands with Alpina red triangle signature on the second’s hand.

It is available in a black rubber strap, or a metal bracelet or a mesh bracelet.

Like the watch, but I just want that model boat ;-)

Can You Help? Vintage Alpina Military Chronograph

Mark, a reader of this site, emailed me to ask about a very tidy Alpina Chrono he’d come across.

He wanted to know the year of manufacture and a bit more info about it.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I recently found a very attractive Alpina Chronograph with a Venus/Helbros 170 movement. The balance is marked EXM, which was for export to America. It’s the small triangle with the inside circle emblem. How old is it? Is it pre-1945?”

I did a bit of digging and I’m wondering if this wouldn’t be a Minerva movement and not the Venus 170?

That would make this an early 1940s piece.

But this certainly isn’t a particular area of expertise of mine, so I’m interested to know your thoughts and get some more input.

What do we think?

Gold stars to the best answers :-)

Alpina Startimer Pilot Collection

A trio of new Alpina Pilots flying in for Baselworld.

Here’s the press release:

[Press Release] Swiss Watch Manufacturer Alpina Genève is excited to launch its new Startimer Pilot Collection; a highly attractive range of contemporary timepieces, inspired by original Alpina designs from the 1920s and 30s.

Today, almost a century later and after having revisited its rich aviation heritage, Alpina introduces the new Startimer Pilot Collection, offering four exciting variations. It kicks off with a basic three-hand date automatic (cal. AL-525). Next in line is the timepiece with in-house developed and produced automatic caliber AL-710, featuring minute and hour indication and off-center date hand. In-house caliber AL-950 powers the iconic Startimer Pilot Regulator, combining historic pilot watch design features with a modern day regulator lay out. Last but not least, a well-balanced and powerfully designed automatic chronograph version (cal. AL-860) is part of this new range.

The clean design that connects these timepieces was clearly inspired by Alpina’s past: a generous 44 mm, anti-reflective satin-finished stainless steel case, mat black dial with oversized white luminous numerals, a glare-free sapphire crystal and a signature red Alpina-triangle on the second hand are the key features.

To further improve user-friendliness and comfort, an original solution was found to secure the leather strap: it closes on the front side of the wrist, not on the reverse or lower sides, hereby resembling the vintage leather straps of the past. A newly designed metal bracelet is available too, and fits on all versions.

To support the launch of this important new collection, Alpina Genève proudly joins forces with Cessna Aviation and PrivatAir, signing a three-year agreement with both partners.

During the coming three years, Alpina Geneve, Cessna Aviation and PrivatAir will work together closely to promote their equally high quality products and services, through cross-marketing activities in Europe and North America.

Furthermore, the production of the Alpina Startimer Pilot timepieces will be limited at 8,888 pieces and they will be presented in a dedicated, luxurious packaging, alongside a Cessna Citation Mustang scale model in PrivatAir livery.
