Arnold & Son HMS1

No fancy external complications here. No fluid, casino games, phases of saturn or any of that nonsense.  Not even any lume as far as I can tell.

Just a simple, classic design from Arnold & Son.

Limited to 500 pieces (250 in stainless steel and 250 in 18kt white or rose gold) this piece measures 40mm.

It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back and water resistance to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss hand-wind Arnold & Son caliber A&S1001.  This has 21 jewels, beats at 21,600 vph and holds a power reserve of 80 hours.

The movement also features a nickel-silver movement rhodium treated with Haute Horlogerie finishing; manually chamfered bridges with polished edges; fine circular graining and “Côtes de Genève” finishing with blued screws.

Forget all that though, the central feature of this watch is that it tells the time.

Nothing more, nothing less :-)

Arnold & Son Hornet World Time Skeleton

Take a moment to process this one – there’s plenty going on here!

Pretty cool though, don’t you think?

Only 50 of these babies will be made (boo!) – 47mm in size in stainless steel.

There’s an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back and water resistance to 50 meters.

Movement is the automatic Arnold & Son in-house caliber A1766. This has 41 jewels, beats at 28,800 vph and holds a power reserve of 42 hours. It is Rhodium treated with fine circular graining and Cotes de Geneva finishing.

Functions are hours, minutes, equation of time, multiple time zone display, mean solar time, big date display at 5 o’clock, and month indicator.

Phew.

It looks awesome too!

Arnold & Son True Beat Seconds

[Press Release] The TBR is the first timepiece in the new Instrument Collection from Arnold & Son and features the first automatic movement with an integrated true beat system to be developed, designed and manufactured entirely at the workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Its pure, timeless design takes its inspiration from the later instrument-style chronometers produced by John Roger Arnold. These answered the call for timepieces rugged and reliable enough to withstand the hardships of life on the high seas combined with the down-to-the-second precision needed by marine navigators to determine longitude.

With the unmistakable design cues that define the family, the TBR is a masterpiece of reduced simplicity. The initials stand for the watch’s two complications, true beat and retrograde. While the time is displayed in an off-centre subdial at 9 o’clock – a hallmark of the entire Instrument Collection – the two complications occupy the middle of the dial and command the front of the stage.

Dominating the face of the watch is the central true beat – or independent – seconds. The true beat seconds – a hark-back to the precision required by navigators on the high seas – is a rarely found complication these days, and its combination with an automatic winding system calls for enormous technical expertise. In the TBR it was made possible by a worldwide patented system comprising a sophisticated double wheel, an oscillating pinion and a pallet mechanism. This complex solution calls for virtually microscopic precision (to tolerances of a micron, or one thousandth of a millimetre) and the key parts are made using state-of-the-art LIGA fabrication technology. LIGA is a German acronym that stands for Lithographie, Galvanoformung, Abformung – lithography, electroplating and moulding – and describes the sequence of processes used to produce metal parts made of nickel and nickel phosphorus.

Arnold & Son TB88 ‘Inside Out’

This is pretty cool – it’s the TB88 ‘Inside Out’ from Arnold & Son.

‘Inside Out’, as the parts normally hidden away are mostly visible through the front dial.

It gives the watch something of a sad face, don’t you think?

At 46mm, this piece will be available in either 18K rose gold or steel.

Movement is the manual-wind A&S5003.

As it beats away slowly at 18,000bph, you’ll get around 100 hours of power reserve from a full wind.

Speaking of which, the movement also features true-beat (dead-beat) seconds: basically the watch ‘ticks’ quartz watch style, even though it’s a manual.

Sapphire crystals front and rear.

No word on pricing yet.

Arnold & Son TE8 Tourbillon Limited Edition

[Press Release] At Basel world 2011, luxury watch brand Arnold & Son unveils the new TE8 Tourbillon, a grand complication timepiece powered with the hand-finished A&S8000 calibre.

A true example of English watchmaking heritage, this defining timepiece will herald a brand new collection that will combine classic styling with innovative technology.

The tourbillon movement, one of the most elegant complications in the world of horology, has played a crucial role in Arnold & Son’s history. An exceptional watchmaker, Sir John Arnold was an active participant in one of the most extraordinary partnership in the world of innovative horology. Indeed, both he and A-L Breguet worked closely, sharing both their knowledge and passion. Evidence of their partnership is Breguet’s first ever tourbillon mounted in John Arnold’s No. 11 movement, a watch that can be found today in London’s British Museum.

Esthetically what sets Arnold & Son’s new Tourbillon TE8 apart is its unique “English” design: the dial is a ¾ wave-form cut-out on the barrel bridge, the tourbillon and motion-work bridges are triangular, and even the three-spoke wheels are shaped with a distinctive flare. This same threespoke design can also be found in the tourbillon cage as well. The chiseled decoration, reminiscent of waves, is a nod to the nautical world and to history’s great seamen and explorers such as James Cook, who entrusted their lives and that of their men to John Arnold’s timepieces.

When compared to more conventional tourbillons found today, the TE8 model is said to be “inverted”, that is to say most technical elements and visually interesting features are shown on the dial side, when those would normally be hidden on the reverse of the dial. Other typically English technical idiosyncrasies will seduce even the most demanding watch connoisseurs. Take, for instance, the symmetrical layout of the movement; to achieve such a feat requires overcoming a number of technical challenges. Thus the barrel spring and the tourbillon cage are centered along the watch’s longitudinal axis. When examining the winding system, one notes the traditional construction, which uses wheels with long and narrow spokes known as wolf’s teeth, used to improve the smoothness of the overall movement.
