Breguet, CNN And Leonardo da Vinci

[Press Release] Breguet will be sponsoring CNN on both its TV channel and its website for a theme week starting November 7th 2011 and entirely devoted to Leonardo da Vinci.

This exceptional coverage will reveal to the entire world the artist’s last masterpiece,Salvator Mundi, the recently rediscovered painting that will be on show at the National Gallery in London from November 9th 2011 to February 5th 2012.

Breguet has been supporting art and culture for many years through various patronage activities such as those on behalf of the Château de Versailles in the restoration of the Marie-Antoinette’s favourite Petit Trianon domain , as well as endeavours undertaken in cooperation with the Louvre, the New York Philharmonic, and the Ermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The watch brand is thus delighted to be associating with CNN for this major project focusing on the most important artistic discovery of the past 200 years.

This painting entitled Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World) and dating from the early 16th century depicts a figure of Christ holding a transparent orb in one hand and giving his blessing with the other.

The CNN theme week presents this work in great detail and retraces the various stages in its discover and its restoration, thereby turning the spotlight on the stunning work and skill of the Renaissance genius.

The link between this theme week devoted to Leonardo da Vinci and the watch company lies in a model within the Breguet collection; in 2010, Breguet presented one of its new creations, the Tradition Tourbillon 7047PT model incorporating a fusee and chain device serving to provide a constant supply of energy to the balance – a concept invented by Da Vinci in the 1490s.

This partnership offers a fresh opportunity to highlight this world featuring a blend of culture, exceptional accomplishments, technical sophistication and beauty – all values deeply cherished by Breguet.

Panerai Exhibition: ‘O’Clock – time design, design time’

Wow, this is pretty cool.  Check out the Damien Hirst piece as part of Panerai’s ‘O’Clock’ exhibition, taking place in Milan until 8th Jan 2012.  How many dials?!

I’d love this.  Not sure the wife would be quite so thrilled though ;-)

Read on for the full press release.

[Press Release] MILAN, Italy, October 2011 – Officine Panerai presents the “O’Clock – time design, design time” exhibition at the Triennale Design Museum. The exhibition explores the relationship between time and design with works from 80 international designers and artists. The exhibition is curated by Silvana Annicchiarico and Jan van Rossem, with a special 8-timepiece installation by Patricia Urquiola entitled, “I mondi di Officine Panerai” (The Worlds of Officine Panerai).

On the occasion of the exhibition, British artist Damien Hirst is premiering two works, made using the spin painting technique and using dials from Panerai watches and household gloss on canvas: Beautiful Sunflower Panerai Painting and Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting.

“I love Panerai”, declared the British artist. “The watches are timeless and I made this spin painting using black Panerai watch faces without hands in the pattern of the seeds in the head of a sunflower – I hope the painting makes you think, we are here for a good time, not a long time.”

Beautiful Sunflower Panerai Painting and Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting are a collaboration between Officine Panerai and Damien Hirst who, on several occasions in the past, has included Panerai watches in his works; a Panerai watch is painted on a table next to medicines and a skull in “Skull with Watch” from 2005 and is physically present in the installations “The Tranquility of Solitude (for George Dyer)” (2006), and “Killing Time” (2008).

Only Watch 2011 – Full Auction Results

The Only Watch 2011 Auction in Monaco is over and the results are now in.

Overall, the standout of the event was the Patek Philippe, Ref. 3939, which went for a staggering 1.4 Million Euros (around US$1.9million).

Eighteen pieces failed to reach their minimum estimate, but that said the auction still raised well over US$4million for its muscular dystrophy charity.

Definitely not too shabby in this difficult economic climate.

Full estimates, results and a reminder of some of the models are available after the jump.

’500 Years’ History of the European Watch’ – Exhibition

Bit of a slow news period at the moment, but there still appear to be plenty of watch events coming up (charity auctions included).

This looks like an interesting one (if you happen to be in Moscow that is): 500 years of the European Watch.

[Press Release] The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie will stage an unprecedented exhibition of watches from October 21st to November 10th 2011 at the prestigious Kremlin Museum in Moscow.

The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) exists to promote the values and culture of Fine Watchmaking in the main international markets, and for the past several years has organised prestigious exhibitions around the world to deliver this message. This autumn, from October 21st to November 10th, will see the turn of the prestigious Kremlin Museum to host a selection of exceptional timepieces that will trace “500 years’ history of the European watch.”

Historically, Russia has provided the culture of time measurement with fertile ground, and Swiss firms were welcomed by the imperial families as of the sixteenth century. From Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612) and his famous Cabinet of Curiosities, from Mikhail of Russia (1596-1645), founder of the House of Romanov who had more than 20,000 clocks imported, to Catherine the Great (1729- 1796) who encouraged the opening of watchmaking workshops in Russia, timepieces from Switzerland, the cradle of time measurement, more than fascinated the era’s great names.

These landmarks in history, fuelled by centuries of intense trade, have inspired the exhibition which the FHH has curated especially for the Kremlin Museum. More than sixty important timepieces from Swiss museums, private collections and the foremost watch companies will be presented in the Armory Chamber, by theme and by period. They magnificently illustrate the milestones in the adventure of time, and the unique expertise of watchmakers who found, in Russia, a venue for their art.

An illustrated brochure will provide visitors with commentary. The full catalogue is available on request.

Structure of the exhibition

• 16th c. Fantasy and enamelled, the first watches.

• 1657 – 1675. The invention of precision.

• 19th c. The Industrial Revolution.

• 1821. The invention of the chronograph.

• 19th c. The return of the fantasy watch.

• Early 20th c. The creation and development of the wristwatch.

• 1930s. Protection against shocks.

• Late 1920s to 1950. Water-resistance and watches for sport.

• 1950s to 1980. The triumph of the electric watch.

• 1970s to 1980. The revival of the mechanical wristwatch.

• 1980s to 2000. Technical and precious fine watchmaking.

• European watches for the Russian market.

Girard-Perregaux Celebrates 220th Anniversary With Travelling Exhibition

As the title suggests, Girard-Perregaux are preparing to celebrate their 220th birthday with a roadshow.

Unfortunately for us folks in Australia this is another interesting show that won’t be making its way down under (‘Only Watch’ tour – we’re looking at you!).

Nevertheless, plenty of others will no doubt enjoy the event as it winds its way around parts of the rest of the World.

Read on for more or see the Roadshow Document [PDF]

[Press Release] To celebrate its 220th anniversary, the Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacture Girard-Perregaux is setting up a worldwide travelling exhibition of exceptional timepieces from its museum collection and of rare contemporary watches. It will be the most important set of Girard-Perregaux timepieces ever showcased outside Switzerland.

Conceived as a learning voyage into the spirit and values of the Swiss Haute Horlogerie Manufacture, this exhibition – “A tale of inspiration – Unveiling 220 years of watchmaking Art” – will take the visitor through two centuries of evolution in the art of measuring time while establishing an interesting link with major events, public figures or works of art which have marked world history.

Among the rare timepieces, documents and watchmaking tools presented, one of the highlights of the exhibition will surely be the “Esmeralda”. This masterpiece by Constant Girard-Perregaux is the most famous edition of the Tourbillon with three gold Bridges and was awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.

The public will also meet with some of the Manufacture’s master watchmakers and craftsmen presenting their art and know-how.

This travelling exhibition will stop in:
Singapore – Art and Science Museum – from 16th to 18th September 2011
· Shanghai – Sinan Mansions – from 20th to 23rd October 2011
· New York – Boutique Girard-Perregaux on Madison – from 18th to 26th November 2011

Other exceptional timepieces from the Girard-Perregaux Museum and of the contemporary collections will be presented this autumn in:
· Paris – Printemps Hausmann – from 25th August au 8th October 2011

And in partnership with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie:
· Mexico – Salón Internacional Alta Relojería – from 4th to 6th October 2011
· Moscow – Kremlin Museum – from 21st October to 10th November 2011
· London – SalonQP – from 11th to 12th November 2011
· Paris – Salon Belles Montres – from 25th to 27th November 2011

Girard-Perregaux, 220 years of watchmaking art
Since 1791, Girard-Perregaux has been reinventing the long tradition of Swiss watchmaking. In its 220 years, the Swiss Manufacture has registered more than 80 patents in the field of watchmaking and has brought legendary creations to life. Today, the Brand is one of the very few to bring together all of the skills and expertise required to produce Haute Horlogerie watches under one roof.

La Esmeralda, watchmaking masterpiece
Several reports of the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 referred to the outstanding display cases of Girard-Perregaux particularly mentioning an extraordinarily beautiful, high-precision chronometer that impressed all who saw it. Its movement was a technical masterpiece with an original structure, and the sumptuous decoration of its case was an exceptional demonstration of engraving that involved most of the techniques of the art.

This pocket-watch with its fascinating tourbillon movement was later named “La Esmeralda”. Over the months before the International Exhibition, it had achieved some remarkable test results at the Neuchâtel Observatory in Switzerland, attested by the institution’s issue of its rating certificate. Then, at the exhibition, it was awarded a gold medal by the jury who recognised the perfection, both technical and aesthetic, of this extraordinary timepiece.

The watch bears the name of the luxury Mexican boutique of the agents Hauser and Zivy, to whom it was entrusted for a while. Then “La Esmeralda” is thought to have passed into the ownership of the President of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz (1830-1915) who led the country from 1876 to 1911. Finally, at the end of the 1960s, the pocket-chronometer was acquired from the President’s great grandson and it now crowns the collections of the Girard-Perregaux Museum.
