Roger Dubuis Excalibur Skeleton Double Flying [SIHH 2012]

Now that’s what you call a ‘skeleton’ watch!

An 88 piece limited edition from Roger Dubuis.

[Press Release] Power, lightness and transparency: this is the triple register in which the new Excalibur Skeleton Double Flying watch in black titanium from ROGER DUBUIS plays its role. This exceptional timepiece is presented for the first time in a “full black” titanium case with a 45 mm diameter, water-resistant to 5 bar (50 metres): a very technical exterior in keeping with the image of the mechanism it houses.
The ROGER DUBUIS Manufacture set off the new craze for skeleton movements back in 2005. It has now given them a totally new dimension by developing skeleton movements with a modern appearance, that is more ethereal and more audacious than before. In parallel to this, the Genevan watchmaker has also devoted its attention to the most emblematic of all watch complications: the Tourbillon. The purpose of this complication is to compensate for the effects of gravity so as to ensure that watches operate more efficiently. ROGER DUBUIS has gone a step further by developing a Double Tourbillon with differential to provide even greater reliability. This is an exercise in high-level watchmaking acrobatics designed to ensure optimal performance.

The skeleton double flying tourbillon movement, treated in grey anthracite, operates the latest arrival in the Excalibur Collection, the RD01SQ calibre, that carries within it an important part of the identity of the Genevan watchmaker’s movements. It incorporates two signature devices characteristic of ROGER DUBUIS, the double flying tourbillon and the skeleton. This hand-wound mechanical skeleton movement has 319 parts and beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (2 x 3 Hz) for a power reserve of 48 hours.

Proposed in a limited edition of 88 pieces, the Excalibur Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon watch in black titanium is delivered with a hand-sewn black alligator-skin strap with an adjustable folding buckle in titanium.

Like all models produced by the Genevan watchmaker ROGER DUBUIS, the Excalibur Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon model in black titanium complies with all the latest requirements for the “Poinçon de Genève”. This mark of quality, issued by the Canton of Geneva to a small number of manufacturers, represents an official guarantee that the watch and its functions operate correctly. It also certifies that its mechanical watch movement is made by hand, assembled and regulated in Geneva and that it complies with the strict requirements laid down for the watch manufacture. Roger Dubuis is the only watch Manufacture to produce 100% of its movements in accordance with the criteria of the “Poinçon de Genève”.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Flying Tourbillon Chronograph

When they set their minds to it, Roger Dubuis certainly make some fine looking pieces.

This particular one celebrates 125 years of the ‘Geneva Seal’.

[Press Release] As a tribute to the Geneva Seal, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, the watchmaker Roger Dubuis presents a limited-edition Excalibur Flying Tourbillon Chronograph with single-pusher. Not only will this outstanding model be the first Roger Dubuis timepiece to meet the recently unveiled new requirements of the Geneva Seal, it also underlines that Roger Dubuis is the only watchmaker to have every one of its movements stamped with the Geneva Seal, the pledge of handcrafted excellence.

The Geneva Seal celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. In tribute to this label of handcrafted excellence, the watchmaker Roger Dubuis, presents an Excalibur Flying Tourbillon Chronograph with single-pusher and power reserve display. Equipped with the new RD580 calibre and produced in a limited edition of just 8 pieces, this outstanding model will be the brand’s first timepiece to obtain Geneva Seal certification according to the new, even more demanding specifications. Without a doubt, this marks the start of a new era in the history of Roger Dubuis and the Geneva Seal: from 2012, all new Roger Dubuis models will fulfil the new requirements that must be met before Geneva Seal certification is awarded.

Technical excellence and powerful design are the Excalibur collection’s defining characteristics. This new Chronograph with Flying Tourbillon and single-pusher, housed in a 45 mm diameter pink-gold case, is the perfect incarnation of the avant-garde spirit that personifies the Genevan Manufacture. In addition to the flying tourbillon at 9 o’clock, the power reserve display at 12 o’clock and the 45-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, this new arrival in the Excalibur collection is distinguished by its platinum micro-rotor, visible from the dial side of the watch. And exceptionally, this oscillating weight bears in full view on its exposed portion the Geneva Seal – normally stamped only on the movement – supplemented on either side with the inscription «125 years».

The exceptional permission to display the Seal on the micro-rotor of this new calibre incorporated in the anniversary model, emphasises that the Geneva Seal is going through a spectacular transitional year for its 125th anniversary.

The Geneva Seal officially came into force in 1886. Bestowed by the State of Geneva on a select few watchmakers, it constitutes the official guarantee that the mechanical watch movement is hand-made, assembled and regulated in Geneva and that it respects the strict requirements of handcrafted excellence in watchmaking. Every component of a movement bearing the Seal is hand-finished and finely decorated, even those that are never exposed to view.

The new requirements outlined by the Geneva Seal – unveiled on 9 November 2011 – focus even more closely on customers and their expectations. While the conditions imposed up to now remain unchanged, new requirements now complement them. Principal change: from now on, the entire watch is Geneva Seal certified, no longer the movement alone. In addition, the Geneva Seal now certifies the functions claimed for the watch, for example water-resistance or the power reserve display.

At Roger Dubuis, adoption of the Geneva Seal goes hand in hand with the quest for excellence that has characterised the brand since its creation in 1995. As the company sees it, the Geneva Seal is not an end in itself: it is the starting point in the pursuit of excellence. That is undoubtedly why Roger Dubuis is the only watchmaking Manufacture to stamp the Geneva Seal on every single one of its products. It was true yesterday and it will be true tomorrow. A sign that leaves no room for error.
