Stefan Johansson Vaxjo (@SJohanssonF1)

He’s doing a great job, old Stefan Johansson, don’t you think?

This looks great – like the smiley moon :-)

In case you’re wondering about the specs behind this one (the press release is light on details), it’s a 47mm piece in stainless steel black PVD.

Movement is an ETA 7751.

[Press Release] The British Formula 3 season promises to be yet another action packed season with 10 events and 29 races throughout Europe. Driver Alex Lynn is set to debut in the Formula 3 series after winning the 2011 championship in Formula Renault, where he racked up an impressive 12 wins during the season.

The talented 18-year-old rising star of British Motorsport has caught the eye of legendary Formula One driver Stefan Johansson, who for the first time has agreed to sponsor a driver.

“This is my first initiative to sponsor a young athlete which I believe have all the ingredients to go all the way in their respective field. I have always been interested to try and help young drivers that have exceptional talent, and I believe Alex clearly falls into this category,” said Johansson. “I have been following his progress the last few years and if he continues on the same path it won’t be long before we will see Alex reaching the top of the ladder in our sport. I am proud and honored to be a part of the team that will make Alex realize his dreams and goals.”

In addition to his continued involvement in motorsports both on and off the track, Johansson is enjoying a second career designing racing inspired Swiss timepieces for his eponymous line, Stefan Johansson Vaxjo. These complex mechanical wonders are put to the ultimate test of being worn by a professional driver during an actual race. They must withstand the vibrations of the steering wheel while negotiating sharp corners as well as, numerous gearshifts and thousands of miles of track. Johansson has designed a limited edition series of 10 custom Mark VIIIF chronographs emblazoned with Lynn’s logo.

“Naturally, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Stefan, his watches are cool and his illustrious career is certainly an inspiration to me! We’ve known Stefan for a few years and I have always appreciated his help and advice along the way,” Said Lynn of the partnership. “Stefan knows what you need to do to get the job done in motorsport and when he suggested the watch partnership, I was really pleased. It will be extra motivation to me to be wearing my Stefan Johansson Växjö watch as I compete!”

In addition to Alex Lynn, legendary racecar drivers Mark Blundell, Johnny Herbert, Arie Luyendyk, Eddie Cheever, Emerson Fittipaldi and Scott Dixon have donned the Mark VIII Collection on the track.

Stefan Johansson Växjö Carbon Fibre Limited Edition

You may remember the ‘track-tested’ Växjö – designed by racer Stefan Johansson?

He’s released a limited carbon fibre edition of same.

Start saving your pennies – it’s $15K; but there will only be 50 of the Valjoux equipped models made.

And in case you’re wondering about the ‘road-tested’ part, Johansson wears his watches whilst racing.  This particular model survived the 24hour Spa race in Belgium.

Neat!

[Press Release]  “Until you actually drive a modern racing car it is hard to comprehend how violent the environment inside the car is, and this is my opinion is a fantastic way to really test the watches ‘real time.’”   -Stefan Johansson

Test it in “real time,” he did. Stefan Johansson brought his revolutionary new carbon fiber designs to the famed Spa Francorchamps track to be worn by he and his teammates at the recent “Total 24HRS of SPA” race in Belgium. The watches passed the ultimate test with flying colors withstanding the vibrations of the steering wheel while negotiating almost 10,000 corners as well as 20,000 gearshifts throughout the 24 hours and over 2,000 miles of track.

The Swiss-made Valjoux movement sits in a “ monocoque chassis”; similar to any modern racing car and as such it is not actually attached to the case itself. This suspension system not only protects the mechanical movement from violent conditions such as those experienced in a racecar but also allows for more flexibility in terms of choice of material for the outer case. Because this durable collection is machined from a solid block of “aircraft grade” billet carbon fiber, not the forged composite material used by many watch brands, these timepieces are unique to today’s market. The dial is covered by a flat sapphire crystal on which both sides are treated with anti-glare coating, which offers a high visibility under any type of lighting conditions.

There will only be 50 pieces created for each watch style, making an innovative, limited collection figuratively and materially linked to race car driving. Priced at $15,000 and available by special order at www.stefanjohansson.com

Stefan Johansson Växjö

Watches and motor racing have had a long association, but a watch fully designed by a racing driving is something rather different.

Le Mans and Sebring winner Stefan Johansson has crafted a very sweet line of limited edition pieces, under the Växjö name (a homage to Johansson’s hometown apparently).

Given they utilise the always robust but not necessarily high-end Valjoux 7750 movement the watches aren’t cheap at $6500+, but they are sought after and the designs really are rather nice.

Each model (model, not piece I presume) gets a road-test on the wrist of Johansson himself, which is a nice touch.

Do want!

Here’s the full press release:

[Press Release] Stefan Johansson merges his artistic sensibilities, his experience as one of auto racing’s most decorated and enduring drivers, and his Swedish heritage in Stefan Johansson Växjö, a line of luxury limited edition and custom Swiss-made timepieces. Johansson’s thirty-plus year career in the sport encompasses Formula 1, Indycar, and sports car racing for a number of prestigious manufacturers and teams. Among his memorable wins are at the 24 Hours of LeMans and two triumphs at Sebring.

With Johansson himself as its driving force, Stefan Johansson Växjö is the only watch brand personally designed (not just endorsed) by an active professional racer. Johansson creates the faces and cases of the current Växjö Mark VIII series, and closely supervises the production of parts and assembly in Switzerland. A forthcoming collection will even feature a patent-pending mechanical movement of Johansson’s own design.

Before it can bear the Växjö crest (a tribute to the watchmaker’s hometown in southern Sweden), each model must pass the ultimate road test: a real race on the wrist of Johansson or another pro driver. Racing conditions — vibrations, shocks, altitude changes and extreme heat — test not just the watch’s movement, but also the fit of the straps, the function of the buckles and the legibility of the dial.

Substance and style get equal time in Stefan Johansson Växjö chronographs, the product of their creator’s lengthy study of horology, his devotion to racing, and his off-track passion for art and design. The sleek, clean, bold timepieces boast 47mm cases suitable for both men and women. A slender bezel allows for a larger dial, and focuses attention on colorful racing motifs and other varied numeral treatments. Johansson’s goal was not to create another watch that mimics the look of a racecar or one of its components. “I wanted to deliver a timepiece with character and personality, one that channels the spirit of the sport and its iconic events,” he says. A clear glass back offers a window onto the watch’s ETA Valjoux 7750 movement, for the perfect intersection of form and function.

To own a Stefan Johansson Växjö watch is to own something rare, unique and personal. A maximum of 250 pieces – and often far fewer – of each model are produced. Watches can be customized to specifications, and each is engraved with its own individual “chassis” number, along with the owner’s name if desired. Diamond bezels can be added upon request. The choice of straps includes rubber, carbon fiber, topstitched python or bony crocodile.

Stefan Johansson Växjö timepieces are sold only directly through the company – there are no retail locations or advertising campaigns. Nonetheless, the buzz has traveled fast. The watches, which range from $6500 and up – have graced the wrists of some of the world’s most dedicated watch collectors including celebrities from the racing world and beyond. Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, Paul Newman and Brad Pitt, to name a few, are fans.
