A. Lange & Sohne Datograph AUF/AB

An update on a modern day classic from A.Lange & Sohne now: their gorgeous Datograph model.

Now called the Datograph AUF/AB (up/down).

The original Datograph was named after conjoining the words ‘date’ (it’s got a big date indicator) and ‘chronograph’ (it’s got one of those too).  Those features remain of course – the big date is lovely!

An additional feature for this model though is a power reserve meter – the auf/ab feature if you prefer.

Head near the ‘ab’ end and it’s time to get winding the Caliber L.951.6 movement!  You do get 60 hours of power reserve for your winding efforts though – more than the original model.

The movement has 46 jewels (451 parts) and beats at a reasonably leisurely 18,000 vph.  It is decorated and assembled by hand, precision adjusted to five positions, plates and bridges are made of German silver and the balance cock is hand engraved.

This latest version has grown a couple of mm to 41mm, in a platinum case.  Personally, I prefer that size and you can never go wrong with a platinum watch (except for when it comes time to pay for one!).

There are front and rear sapphire crystals and it is water resistant to 30 meters.

The blue-grey strap is crocodile with a platinum buckle.

Out some time in 2012 if you can find (and afford) one.

A. Lange & Söhne ‘Pour le Mérite’ Book

Fans of A. Lange & Söhne and books with lots of pictures should enjoy this one.

Out today and entitled ‘the “Pour le Mérite” Collection’ this book takes a look at most things A. Lange & Söhne.

Covering the early years, collectors stories and of course detailed technical descriptions of the watches, there’s also information on the disassembly of a high end watch equipped with a tourbillon with fusée-and-chain.

Published in both English and German, this has been written and photographed Peter Chong – an avid watch collector and founder of the A. Lange & Söhne Timezone.com forum.

13 months in the making, off the back of a 15-year affair with the brand this is certainly a labour of love.

$640 for the ‘regular’ or $720 for the ‘deluxe’ this is one for serious A. Lange & Söhne aficionados.

New A. Lange & Söhne Hong Kong Boutique

If only the state of the World’s economy could be judged by the number of new watch boutiques opening recently.

Going by that measure alone we’d be in great shape; with recent unveilings by Hublot, Bell & Ross and Tag Heuer amongst others.

Joining that merry gang is A. Lange & Söhne, with the opening of their first boutique in Hong Kong.

The shop is at Shop G11, 1881 Heritage, Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.

A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk For Kidz Horizon Charity Auction

It may be the best-known watch auction benefiting a children’s charity, but ‘Only Watch‘ is far from the only game in town.

August 27th 2011 will see the Kidz Horizon Charity Auction, to be held at the Ritz Carlton ballroom in Singapore.

The Kidz Horizon, formed in 2004, raises funds for children suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer or AIDS/HIV whose parents are not in a position to afford the medical treatment they need.

A. Lange & Sohne have produced a special Zeitwerk piece for this auction, featuring a beautifully finished hand wound L043.1 movement.

The back of the case is engraved with “1/1″ (it’s the only one, see?) and “SGP 2011.”

The white gold Zeitwerk usually has a black dial, but this special piece has a grey dial.

Very nice.  Go ahead and dig deep on those bids!

A. Lange & Söhne Lange Zeitwerk Striking Time

[Press Release] Ludwig van Beethoven’s prodigious reputation is due in large measure to his Symphony No. 5 with its four-note fanfare opening.

The fate motif now ushers in a new chapter in the history of A. Lange & Söhne: the most recent sibling in the Lange Zeitwerk family is endowed with a chiming mechanism that is visible in its face.

It strikes the quarter-hours with high-pitched tones and the full hours at a lower pitch. Played fast-forward, the result is the famous leitmotif.

The Lange Zeitwerk Striking Time is the first Lange wristwatch with an acoustic signature.

Nearly two years ago, when A. Lange & Söhne announced the beginning of a new epoch with the Lange Zeitwerk and its unusual design hallmarks, the declared objective was to depart from the beaten track.

So it is no coincidence that the first chiming Lange watch is a “Zeitwerk” as well. Additionally, its mechanical design concept offers ideal prerequisites for the integration of a strike train.

A. Lange & SÖHNE – Saxonia Dual Time

[Press Release] For anyone who travels frequently or who often needs to communicate with people elsewhere in the world, the display of a second time zone is a truly useful complication. Ever since 1884, when the world was divided into 24 time zones at the International Meridian Conference in Washington, crossing from one zone into another was a potential source of confusion.

To solve the problem, Lange’s watchmakers soon began to craft pocket watches with two separately settable time indications.

But because the 19th-century world was not as globalised as it is now, the demand for such timepieces was relatively modest.

Today, historic Lange pocket watches with a second time zone are correspondingly rare and highly prized.

Now, the Saxonia Dual Time presents a new paragon of convenience when it comes to setting the time for a second zone: When its owner makes the transition from one time zone to another, the solid-gold hour hand that indicates local time can be incremented or decremented in one-hour steps.

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin

For 2011 Lange is redsigning the Saxonia family, and the new Saxonia Thin offers discrete luxury in a case that measures only 5.9m thick and 40mm in diameter.

This is the thinnest timepiece crafted to date by the venerable Saxon manufactory.

To fit the thin case, A. Lange & Söhne developed an equally slim manually wound movement that can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The new caliber L093.1 has a diameter of 28 millimeters and is a meret 2.9 millimeters thick.

The movement uses the German-silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing as well as chamfered and polished edges. Gold chatons are secured with thermally blued screws, and sunray finish is applied to the wheels that are visibly integrated in the plate.

The movement features an indexless oscillation system that beats with a frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour and can rely on an ample power reserve of 72 hours. The escapement bears the typical A. Lange & Söhne signature: the free-hand engraving on the balance cock.

The retail price will be 16,300 euros in pink gold with silver dial.

A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérit [Video]

In December last year, German watch-maker A. Lange & Söhne announced the upcoming release of a clever new timepiece that will make its official debut at SIHH 2011 – the latest edition to the Richard Lange collection called the ‘Tourbillon Pour le Mérite’.

The watch contains a very unique feature; a specially designed cutaway seconds sub-dial that pivots intermittently to provide the wearer with an uninterrupted view of the stop-seconds tourbillon at work.

Thanks to Jason at Professional Watches you can see this in action in the video below.  Very clever stuff!

A cam wheel has been positioned at 6 o’clock and openings have been cut in what would normally be a closed Glashütte-style three-quarter plate.

The Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Mérite is presented in a 41.9mm case and will be offered in a limited production of just 100 pieces in platinum and unlimited production in rose gold.

Despite the power required to flip the seconds sub-dial twice every hour, the movement offers a power reserve of 36 hours.
