Vacheron Constantin Malte Tourbillon [SIHH 2012]

[Press Release] The new Malte collection celebrating 100 years of the tonneau shape at Vacheron Constantin, simply could not ignore the most iconic of all horological complications: the tourbillon. A perfect embodiment of the expertise of the master-watchmakers of the Manufacture, the tourbillon serves to compensate for the effects of gravity on timepieces.
Vacheron Constantin has long since demonstrated its know-how in the field of the tourbillon movement. Often associated with another complications, the tourbillons from the Geneva-based manufacturer reveal remarkable know-how and undeniable audacity. It is in this spirit that Vacheron Constantin offers a new interpretation of this stunning complication in keeping with the classic style and elegance inherent to this anniversary collection.

On a pure, restrained dial featuring pink gold hour-markers and Roman numerals for the 6 and 12 o’clock indications, the tourbillon bearing the seconds hand finds its natural place, perfectly integrated within the new and refined lines of the Malte collection. Its positioning at 6 o’clock calls requires slightly offsetting the axis of the hour and minute hands which thereby stand out above their beating heart.

The Malte Tourbillon timepiece – the largest in the collection – has a curving 18K pink gold case measuring 38 x 48.2 mm and is fitted with a brown Mississippiensis alligator leather strap complete with Maltese cross-shaped rose gold folding clasp.

Such an exceptional watch deserved an equally exceptional movement, and this model is duly equipped with mechanical hand-wound Calibre 2795, comprising 246 parts, beating at a frequency of 2.5 Hz (18,000 vibrations/hour) and endowed with an almost two-day power reserve.

This new tonneau-shaped movement – making a perfect fit with the case – is entirely developed and crafted within the Manufacture. The tourbillon carriage is inspired by the brand’s signature Maltese cross, and magnificently showcases the exceptional level of finishing of each movement part, including a number of naturally hand-bevelled interior angles.

The rounding off of the tourbillon bar, which always represents a significant technical challenge, calls for over 11 hours of manual work in order to meet the finishing criteria demanded by Vacheron Constantin. Rounding off consists of filing each end of the arms in order to give them a conical or semi-cylindrical shape, while respecting the limits of the centre and the heels. To finalise this operation, the craftsmen rub it down with stones, buffs, wooden pegs and finishing pastes in order to achieve a perfectly polished effect.

The Malte Tourbillon model also meets the new criteria of the Hallmark of Geneva. Instated in 1886 by the Grand Council of the Republic and Canton of Geneva, the Hallmark of Geneva is a guarantee of origin, of craftsmanship, of durability and of expertise. This unique quality label has just undergone a fundamental transformation, since the certification no longer concerns the calibre alone, but the timepiece as a whole. This new approach represents a major evolution of this independent certification that has enjoyed the longstanding support of Vacheron Constantin and which has just decided to respond more fully than ever before to the legitimate expectations of an ever more informed clientele.

Vacheron Constantin Kalla Haute Couture à Pampilles

Noice; unusual; different.

[Press Release] Vacheron Constantin revives the 19th century tradition of “secret” watches that feature a small cover which has to be opened to read the time.

Far more than just a watch, the Kalla Haute Couture à Pampilles is an entirely handmade bracelet that is extremely supple as a result of a goldsmith technique known as emmaillement (Parisian mesh). Emmaillement reduces the white gold material to a minimum in order to showcase the curtain of 28.70 carats of brilliant and flame cut diamonds, as well as drape sensually around the wrist. The Kalla Haute Couture à Pampilles is fitted with the manual-winding Calibre 1005 with the crown positioned on the back of the movement.

Created by craftsmen for whom timekeeping is not a priority, this jewellery watch is dressed in brilliant and flame cut diamonds that give time a new personality. Each set of precious stones is selected with meticulous care to ensure that it complies with the strictest criteria regarding purity, colour and cut to guarantee perfect uniformity. Entirely hand-made and exceptionally supple, a technique known as emmaillement reduces the material to a minimum so that the diamonds cover the whole piece, including the clasp.

Vacheron Constantin Metiers d’Art Perspectives d’Art Dove For Only Watch 2011

Moving on now to Vacheron Constantin’s beautiful ‘Doves’ model for Only Watch 2011.

[Press Release] This model embodies an exceptional association of the famous Métiers d’Art cultivated within the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin: engraver, enameller, gemsetter and guillocher are working together to create this unique magnificent watch, especially developed for Only Watch.

Inspired by the technique of repetitive tiling designs known as tessellation, this “Métiers d’Art – Perspectives d’Art” watch invites observers to explore a reality that plays with human perception.

This watch combines several of the Manufacture’s artistic crafts that vividly express the theme of perspective in order to accentuate the sense of depth, each according to its own technique.

The watch gold, enamelled and diamond-set dial adopts concepts such as geometry, symbolism and motion, subtly nesting and layering them in order to generate several levels of meaning and interpretation.

This timepiece is inspired by a drawing by Maurits Cornelis Escher – a Dutch engraver and graphic artist (1898-1972) whose work was based on a subtle play on architecture, perspective and space.

This one-of-a-kind creation depicts a flight of red and white doves – the Only Watch colours – born from the Métiers d’Art exercised within the Manufacture.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Small Model Date

[Press Release] Vacheron Constantin is beginning a new chapter in the history of the sports collection from the Manufacture with the launch of the Overseas Small Model Date Self-Winding, a version featuring a subtle blend of character and elegance. Constituting both a precious piece of jewellery and a resolutely technical timepiece, this new Overseas ladies’ watch is notably distinguished by its 36 mm-diameter case in 18-carat pink gold and by its mechanical self-winding movement.

The case, the design, and the ergonomics of this new Overseas model – which retains all the identifying characteristics of the collection – are specifically intended for women. Its outstanding elegance is matched by its technical complexity, as embodied in the remarkably slender 18-carat pink gold case housing a soft iron antimagnetic protective cage – a collection signature feature – ensuring the smooth running of the mechanical movement. This new Overseas Small Model Date Self-Winding watch also picks up other classic themes of the collection, such as the Maltese Cross inspired bezel and the links of the 18-carat pink gold bracelet inspired by the same motif.

Water-resistant to 5 bar (approximately 50 metres), the refined case of this Overseas timepiece is fitted with a solid screw-in case-back adorned with the Overseas medallion bearing the engraving of the famous Amerigo Vespucci three-masted sailing vessel. In response to women’s ever growing attraction to fine mechanical watchmaking, the slender case houses Calibre 1226, a 143-part mechanical self-winding movement. It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, drives the hours, minutes, central seconds and date functions, and ensures an approximately 40-hour power reserve.

The perfectly readable sunburst satin-brushed silver-toned dial is a blend of elegance and understatement, enlivened by the collection’s characteristic hands coated with a white luminescent substance for the hours and minutes. The date window at 3 o’clock and the 18-carat pink gold applied Arabic numerals represent distinctive new features of this ladies’ variation and an eloquent expression of horological classicism, while the bezel delicately set with 88 brilliant-cut diamonds (approx. 0.36 cts) lends an additional touch of femininity.

The new Overseas Small Model Date Self-winding from Vacheron Constantin comes in two versions: one with an 18-carat pink gold bracelet, and the other with a taupe-coloured leather strap complete with an additional vulcanised grey rubber strap. A triple-blade, double-pusher folding clasp in 18-carat pink gold featuring a polished half Maltese Cross ensures optimal security and comfort on the wrist.

Designed for daily wear or to accompany the most precious moments, this new newcomer to the Overseas collection reveals its dual nature and thereby responds to the clearly expressed wishes of an ever more demanding feminine clientele.

Vacheron Constantin Exhibition At National Museum of Singapore

[Press Release] From June 24th to August 14th 2011, in collaboration with Vacheron Constantin, the National Museum of Singapore extends an invitation to discover the history of the Manufacture and that of Genevan Haute Horlogerie. The first major public exhibition of the heritage of the world’s oldest watch manufacturer in uninterrupted activity since its founding, the “Treasures of Vacheron Constantin – A legacy of watchmaking since 1755” shed light on more than 250 years of creativity and know-how.

Conceived as an educational journey revolving around the spirit of the artisans cabinotiers of the 18th Century, the exhibition is an exploration of the evolution of the measurement of time, of its crafts and of artistic influences, a trilogy that defines the history of Vacheron Constantin since its foundation.

The visitor travels back in time via 180 exceptional pieces from the heritage of the Manufacture in Geneva, in an exposition covering 600m2. From archived documents belonging to Jean-Marc Vacheron and Francois Constantin to particular watchmaking tools, and from the Genevan workbenches of the artisans cabinotiers to the machines invented by the Manufacture, the set design gives life to a technical and aesthetic universe of incredible richness.

Like an open book on the past and present, the pieces of the exhibit highlight the Métiers d’Art without which the Haute Horlogerie of Geneva would not shine as brightly. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a brilliant illustration of this truth: the pocket watch Les Bergers of Arcadia created in 1923 embodies in and of itself the alchemy of manufacturing know-how developed in the course of an endless quest for excellence. On location for several days following the exposition’s opening, talented artisans of the Manufacture enthrall visitors with some of their secrets. Engraver, gem-setter, guillocheur, enameller and watchmaker showcase a know-how inherited from past centuries that continues to nurture constant creativity.
