Romain Jerome 100-Year Anniversary Of The Titanic

You may have heard a rumour that it’s the 100 year anniversary of the Titanic meeting its icy end (and yes kids, the Titanic was real – not just a movie!).

Romain Jerome have long had a Titanic connection, so it seems only natural that they would issue two special edition models of their ‘DNA’ series – the Steampunk Auto 100th Anniversary and the Steampunk Chrono 100th Anniversary. The DNA here of course being slivers of the leaky luxury liner.

The models feature engraved casebacks with a medallion commemorating the centennial of the Titanic’s launch date.

Despite the heritage, the prior Titanic models from RJ have looked (deliberately) rough. These two steampunk models look fantastic though, don’t you think? I particularly like the non-chrono version.

Here’s the specs:

Romain Jerome Pac Man Watch Teaser (@rj_romainjerome)

Following on from their fantastic Space Invaders watch, it seems only natural that Romain Jerome are now focussing on another classic arcade game from the same era: Pac Man.

I do like the style of their press release – very clever.

More news on the actual watch as soon as we have it!

Romain Jerome MoonFighter Writing Instruments

Just … wow … !!

If you thought Romain Jermone did a great job with their recents Space Invaders watch (and they did), check out their line of pens.

Fan-bloody-tastic.

Complete with ‘moon dust’ :-)

[Press Release] Some people continue to dream and have lost nothing of their ability to marvel, nor their memories of an age when their days were filled with rockets and comic strip heroes. These are adults whose memories bear the indelible imprint of the imaginary world of amusement games and Star Wars space vessels. Specifically with them in mind, RJ-Romain Jerome has created the MoonFighter pen : a writing instrument that is mid-way between Back to the Future and Space Invaders, and which reinterprets space mythology and a taste for fun.

This unique pen with its impeccably sleek profile and smooth curves is entirely made in Switzerland, although it looks as if it has just emerged from a NASA lab or from the desk of Major Boothroyd, the iconoclastic inventor of the James Bond accessories. Nonetheless, the sheer purity and simplicity of the design also evoke the golden age of aeronautics, the glorious era of the first Paris-New York flights, spiced up with a dash of Art Deco style. This tribute to third millennium design is a compendium of aesthetic appeal featuring an extremely playful DNA, enriched by the finest expression of the expertise cultivated by RJ-Romain Jerome in the domain of fusing materials.

Moon dust, embodying all human fantasies of exploring the sky, is encapsulated in the cockpit bubble, and the resulting eloquent invitation to escape earthbound reality is interpreted in three different versions : Heavy Metal, Black Metal and Vintage, each adorned with 48 handapplied rivets. To ensure take-off in the best possible conditions, the MoonFighter is protected by a leather pouch and, upon returning from its missions, fits neatly into its carbon-finished docking station.

Whether with the titanium nib of a fountain pen or the rounded tip of a rollerball pen, the lucky owners of these space-age inspired new writing instruments can now sketch, write or compose their own personal legend.

MSRP’s start at 1,990 Swiss Francs to 2,350 Swiss Francs.

Romain Jerome Space Invaders

Back in March we brought you news that Romain Jerome and Taito had teamed up to produce a tribute to Taito’s seminal Space Invaders game.

The fruits of that effort are now here, and all I can say is ‘wow’ – I absolutely adore these!

Two limited edition pieces will be available, both produced in a 78 unit run (in a nod to the year Space Invaders was born – 1978).

The models feature a dial made up of three layers of pixelated and shot-peened dies, featuring hand-drawn file strokes.

Depending on the version, the 3.5mm hand-applied Space Invaders are either lacquered in different colors (‘day’) or coated with Superluminova (‘night’).

I love how the ‘night’ version really echoes the feel of the original arcade game.

The 46mm case comes in black PVD stainless steel. It has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic Romain Jerome caliber RJ001-A with 23 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 42 hours.

Now who do I have to kill / bribe / sleep with to get my hands on one!

Romain Jerome Rock the Rock DNA For Only Watch 2011

Not to be outdone by the likes of MB&F and Tag Heuer, Romain Jerome have produced their own unique piece for this year’s ‘Only Watch‘ charity auction.

Rather cleverly they’ve used a real part of Monaco to create this one – fitting both their own DNA philosophy and that of the auction.

Read on for their press release and more details on this very well thought out timepiece:

[Press Release] On the occasion of Only Watch 2011, RJ-Romain Jerome has chosen to combine its DNA with that of the Principality of Monaco.

The brand has found in the very rock on which the city is built the raw material serving as a dial for the one-of-a-kind model created for the auction on behalf of research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Philippe Mondielli, geologist and scientific director of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, accompanied by Luc Pettavino, President of the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy, chose the western cliff of the Rock of Monaco, in the Saint-Martin gardens just a few steps away from the Cathedral and the Prince’s Palace, as the ideal site from which to extract an extremely small portion of the limestone rock.

This fragment, considered as a testimony to the evolution of species over millions of years, now serves as the dial for the Rock the Rock DNA watch – forming a time-honoured face now framed by an ultra-contemporary matt black ceramic bezel. The central hour and minute hands mark off time in their own way, while the seconds set the cadence for a disc at 9 o’clock, also carved in stone.

This mineral plate rotating on the surface of the dial evokes the earth’s crust and humankind’s difficulty in mastering its movements. Two red lines cross through the watch – one passing under the bezel and continuing along the strap in alcantara. Each time the seconds disc moves to 0, 15, 30 and 45, these lines symbolise for a fleeting movement the latitude and longitude coordinates of Monaco, the very place where the stone was taken from the Rock.

This unique timepiece is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity guaranteeing the origin of the materials used.

Romain Jerome Moon Dust-DNA : Black Mood and Steel Mood

Alongside tweaks to their Titanic DNA watches, Romain Jerome have released updated versions of their Moon Dust range.

And yes, just as the Titanic models contain real Titanic rust, these are said to carry real moon dust (or the contents of Romain Jerome’s hoover bag – you decide ;-) ).

More than that though, the bezels contain fragments from Apollo 11 and the straps are made using strands of fibre from ISS spacesuits.

Pretty cool eh?!

Romain Jerome Titanic-DNA Octopus

Romain Jerome has issued some updates to its Titanic range, with the curiously named ‘DNA Octopus’.

Octopus is the very first diver’s watch conceived by RJ-Romain Jerome. It carries the large X-shaped intersection found on dials in the RJ-Romain Jerome collections. It also features the oxidised and stabilised metal concept that made its debut in the original Titanic model.

In case you were unaware, the Titanic moniker is not simply the name; a small amount of oxidised and stabilised steel from the actual Titanic  has been incorporated into the notched bezel.

The crown, with its eight rivets, is screw-locked giving the 46mm Titanic a water resistance of 888 feet (270 m) when it sinks (sorry, couldn’t resist!).
