Zenith Pilot Doublematic [Baselworld 2012]

A beautiful watch and a (relative) bargain at around $6500 – custom ordered.

I have no idea what the person who wrote the following press release was smoking when they produced this though.

Steve Gilmor, is that you? ;-)

[Press Release] Expanding the range of what is possible. Ignoring boundaries. Soaring up to the blue skies where one can look down and see the whole earth. Counting up oceans, cities, forests, mountains and deserts—wonders invented by Man and natural extravaganzas. Having an indomitable spirit and an awareness of the dangers. Believing in the inseparable team one forms with the machine. Being prepared to fight fatigue, hail, mechanical failure, headwinds, sleet, slowed reflexes, geomagnetic currents, blinding sun and, at the same time, night. Dreaming of Phileas Fogg, feeling driven onward by one’s wings. Flying against time. Marking off time zones. And returning to one’s starting point having embraced the whole world.

Mankind has always wanted to explore new lands and push back the boundaries of the known. In 1924, Americans Smith and Arnold completed the first flight around the world. In 1957, three B-52s made the same trip non-stop.

“A watch is an essential item for navigating in an airplane and adjusting [fuel] consumption. But it has to be a good watch. The Zenith watch is perfect,” said Marcel Brindejonc des Moulinais in 1913. That was the year this famous aviator completed his visits to the European capitals, a 5,000-km tour that earned him the Legion of Honour. He was only 21 years old. One of his navigation instruments was a Zenith.

Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aeronef Type 20

I’m slowly getting a bit of a ‘thing’ for Zenith watches.

This Pilot Montre d’Aeronef definitely adds to that.

A bit of a monster at 57.7mm I’m not sure how it would sit on my average sized wrist, but it certainly looks great in photos: particularly that oversize crown.

One reason for the heft may be that this is powered by what is essentially a pocket-watch movement – the Zenith Calibre 5011.

The overall fatness of case, crown and movement is complemented by the stocky hands.

Only 250 of these will be made – fewer actually available as the first one has already been sold to support a children’s charity.

Off to check that lotto ticket ..

Zenith Heritage El Primero 38mm Chronograph

Will have to check this one out in person.

At 38mm, the El Primero Chrono looks fantastic, but I wonder if it might feel a little ‘small’?

Nevertheless, a great range – available in a host of different options: including models with a bit of bling if required.

You can choose from 18kt rose, white or yellow gold – all of which have an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back and water resistance to 100 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic Zenith in-house caliber El Primero 400 with 21 jewels, 36,000 vph and a power reserve of 50 hours.

The rotor is finished in a Cotes de Geneva pattern.

Dial and strap options include leather and metal and a number of different colour choices: including brown and blue.

Zenith Captain & Pilot Lefty Chronographs For Only Watch 2011

[Press Release] When can we hope to see an effective treatment for children affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a highly debilitating disease that affects one boy in 3,500? Under the patronage of Prince Albert II, the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy is organising an auction of exceptional watches. Proceeds will be entirely donated to medical teams involved in research on this disorder. The previous biannual operation raised three million euros for 90 researchers and clinicians in five different countries. For this latest edition, ZENITH has created two exclusive models featuring left-hand winding.

The “Only Watch” auction brings together the greatest watch brands. While keen competitors on the market, the members of this corporation are united here for a praiseworthy purpose: funding research aimed at jugulating a debilitating disease that affects 250,000 children. The collection of watches specially created for this occasion will travel the world and the spirit of healthy emulation stemming from this auction leads watch brands to display ever-greater boldness and creativity. For Only Watch 2011, the Manufacture ZENITH will introduce two exclusive models with left-hand winding. Why the inversion? Like Leonardo da Vinci, one in ten people are left-handed, and the proportion varies considerably between various countries, reaching as much as one-quarter of the population in some cases. It is for them that these two models are specifically designed.

The two timepieces belong to the Captain Chronograph pink gold and Pilot Chronograph lines. The former, featuring a gold case, is intended for week-day wear in a professional environment; while the latter, in steel and sporting a more casual appearance, is ideal for leisure time and weekend activities. Both models house the legendary El Primero calibre – the name that puts a sparkle in the eye of watch devotees the world over. The name that is universally cited – and with good reason: launched by ZENITH in 1969, this movement is quite simply the world’s most accurate series-produced mechanical calibre. Its secret lies in the cadence of its balance: 10 vibrations per second, whereas as others generally beat at 8 vibrations a second at best. This represents an edge that makes all the difference, since it takes El Primero firmly into the field of horological high frequency.

ZENITH, the Pioneer Spirit
From its earliest origins, the ZENITH brand has accompanied discoverers, explorers and scientists. In the past, the Manufacture even equipped Albert I, the great-great-grandfather of Monaco’s current head of state. Nicknamed “the scholar prince”, Albert I is considered one of the forefathers of ecology.

Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Blashford

Colonel John Blashford-Snell OBE DSc(Hon) DEng(hc) FRSGS.

Even the name sounds impressive, doesn’t it?

Blashford-Snell is a renowned explorer and old-school adventurer, having been amongst the first to explore the Blue Nile and the Zaire River.

Explore his website and you’ll find plenty of images of the great man in a safari-suit, meeting royalty and riding elephants across raging rivers.

Fairly typical daily activities ;-)

Zenith are now honoring Blashford-Snell’s achievements with the release of a limited 500-piece Stratos Flyback.

At 45.5mm the Stratos has an in-house Zenith El Primero caliber 405B automatic movement. It operates at 36,000 bph (5 hertz) and has a power reserve of about 50 hours.

It has a 12 hour column wheel chronograph with a flyback complication, the time, and the date

The Colonel – who’s still exploring and helping charities into his older years – has been a wearer of Zenith watches since the 70′s, so this is a very fitting partnership.

Zenith for iPhone

Ordinarily I’d probably be a little ‘meh, so what?’ about a basic iPhone brand app – everyone’s got one of those, right?

There was one feature of this new Zenith app that caught my eye though, and that’s the ability to virtually ‘try-on’ any of their watch collection.

Snap a photo of your wrist and overlay the model of your choice.

Not quite a substitute for the real thing but not a bad second-place.

I can well imagine a great augmented reality app that real-time overlayed a whole host of cool (and unobtainable) watches over your wrist :-)

Back to this app though: you also get Zenith news, model details, online watch registration and help locating your local Zenith dealer.

The app can be downloaded here.

Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th

[Press Release] The flight instruments in the cockpit of a fi ghter jet are subjected to abrupt variations in pressure, intense vibrations and violent accelerations – from 9G to 11G. Thanks to its robust construction, the ZENITH Stratos can withstand it all.

As the faithful heir of the Rainbow Flyback model developed for the French Air Force in 1997, the Stratos is equipped with the world’s most accurate automatic chronograph movement – the mythical El Primero – as well as the Striking 10th and Flyback functions. Accuracy and reliability have been the watchwords of the Manufacture ZENITH since 1865.

Very early on, this obsession with accuracy and precision played an important role in aviation and transport. Today, this Manufacture timepiece is becoming established in the fascinating world of military and sporting aviation, where performance and absolute confi dence in one’s team members take center stage. Clear for take-off !

As a manufacturer of navigational chronometric instruments for civil and military aviation, ZENITH proudly presents its new model: the El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th. The original model that inspired this chronograph was the Rainbow Flyback, which was designed according to a set of specifi cations prepared by the French Ministry of Defense.

Watches designed for the military are required to meet a much higher number of demanding specifi cations than those required for civilian use, and this has led the ZENITHengineers to enhance the accuracy, endurance and reliability of their creations even further. These instruments must continue to function accurately even in extreme conditions, such as violent acceleration, pressure and temperature variations, vibrations and magnetic fields. Aviation undoubtedly represents one of the most challenging environments for watches and on-board instruments.

This newest ZENITH watch features an extremely durable casing and a notched, unidirectional rotating bezel with a black, scratch-proof ceramic disk. A telemeter scale has also been placed on the dial flange. The large date indicator at 6 o’clock features an instant-change mechanism. The rounded sapphire crystal is inspired by the shape of an astrodome – the dome located on the fuselage’s dorsal ridge to enable astronavigation.

The Stratos Flyback Striking 10th is equipped with the El Primero caliber. This integrated column-wheel chronograph movement beats at a high frequency and is 25% faster than all other mechanical calibers. The Striking 10th function visibly displays each beat of this exceptional mechanism – every tenth of every second – which represents the smallest division of time measurable by a mechanical caliber thus far.

The Stratos Striking 10th is also equipped with the Flyback function. While flying, routes are calculated based on predetermined destinations and times. Before the Flyback function was invented, wearers were required to press two different buttons three times each in order to stop, reset and restart the chronograph hand. This is too complicated and slow for pilots at the controls of a fighter jet. Ingenious watchmakers thus developed the Flyback function, which stops, resets and restarts the chronograph with one push of a single button. Pilots can thus recalculate a new route instantly, giving them an advantage that is particularly vital when landing according to a time conveyed by the control tower.

Only 1,969 copies of this limited-edition model will be produced. This number was chosen to mark the year the El Primero movement was first created.

Zenith Captain Dual Time

[Press Release]

Captain: the very name calls up flights of fancy! It evokes long-distance travel, untamed seas, but also the fabulous fortunes made trading in distant outposts… The status of captain was, in the past, reserved for officers who commanded a royal vessel.

Nothing of the art and skill of navigation at sea could remain a mystery to the man who aspired to this position. Captain is also a collection that embodies the highest expression of ZENITH’S watchmaking heritage. It encompasses an expertise that, like navigation at sea, is passed on from one generation of watchmaker to the next within the Locle Manufacture.

The new collection is enriched with three models with complications: Power reserve, Moonphase and Second time zone.

The three new models are inspired by the Captain line created in 1952, a leading collection of Zenithautomatic watches.

The 2011 collection holds true to the course of the original models. All the expertise of watchmaking– technique, chronometric performance, and aesthetics – is integrated into these three creations that make clear allusions to historic timepieces, with dauphine hands, facetted with rhodium-plating and long markers that are hand-set.

The case is enlarged to its present-day size of 40 mm. The development of this collection has been led by technical and chronometric achievement – just as it was 50 years ago. Equipped with Elite calibers, the models of the new generation benefit from an additional half-century of watchmaking experience.

The manufactured movements, decorated with Côtes de Genève and circular-graining are visible through a sapphire case back.
