DeWitt Twenty-8-Eight Automatic

Been getting all excited about DeWitt’s crazy X-watch, but let’s not forget their more mainstream models :-)

[Press Release] The face of the watch is artistically divided in two different guilloché zones. In the centre, a light flame pattern provides incredible life to the dial as the slightest wrist movement will animate the flames in graceful reflections.

The second pattern, at the perimeter, takes the form of a regular and reassuring sunray that structures the whole design. Flames and sunrays are separated by a fine circle applique that gives a final touch of shiny elegance and echoes the thin and polished columns on the bezel.

Time has never been more readable as large Roman numerals are positioned on the four cardinal points and discretely interconnected by small Arabic numerals positioned at five minutes intervals.

The Twenty-8-Eight Automatic is an “urban classic” with a 43 mm round case made in 18-carat white or rose gold. Offering a subtle combination of character and refinement, the design of the Twenty-8-Eight collection is sober and balanced. Presenting a slightly thinner case (10,28 mm) than the Academia collection as well as more discrete columns on its flanks, the Twenty-8-Eight collection gives a fascinating impression of lightness.

Elegant and streamlined lugs achieve to complete the design with perfect proportions and offer a remarkable comfort of wearing. However, the strong DNA, so characteristic of DeWitt watches, remains fully recognizable.

The Twenty-8-Eight Automatic houses a solid and reliable calibre and displays hours, minutes and centre seconds. The hours and minutes hands are open-worked and in the shape of two-edged swords whereas the seconds hand, elegant and thin, gracefully glides round the dial. The Twenty-8-Eight Automatic fully complies with very demanding finishing norms of the DeWitt Manufacture: satin-brushed surfaces, polishing and bevelling. The quality of the finishing can be observed through the sapphire crystal back, which also unveils a fine DeWitt rotor, designed in-house.

Also, two miniature “W” signatures are to be found on the crown and on the golden buckle. Last but not least, just as any DeWitt watch, it is entirely assembled, adjusted and tested by a single master watchmaker, from A to Z.

DeWitt X-Watch For Only Watch 2011

Published by in DeWitt on June 14th, 2011 | 1 Comment »

DeWitt join the Only Watch party with this very interesting ‘convertible’ piece – the X-Watch.

Apparently this design was inspired by a concrete mixer of all things!

The ‘X’ frame on the front slides open to allow the wearer to tilt the underlying case.

That’s far from the X-Watch’s only trick though.

Read on for the full details ..

[Press Release] Swiss luxury watch brand DeWitt supports “Only Watch 2011″ Charity Auction by presenting the X Watch, an exceptionally complicated horological piece of art. This timepiece is the third one in DeWitt’s reversible concept watches whose mechanism initially inspired from a concrete mixer, was already masterfully executed in the Antipode (concept watch no 2) and confers both a spectacular liveliness and a playful twist to the watch.

In this new creation, DeWitt has imagined a spectacular articulated “bonnet” in the shape of an “X” that partly covers the face of the watch. This approach arouses curiosity by hiding some parts of the mechanism in a subtle game of layers. The “X” shaped bonnet is activated by four push-pieces positioned in the upper and lower part of the case. By pressing the push-pieces, the “X” separates in its middle and smoothly opens up to disclose the face of the watch. A special mechanism was integrated to control the speed of its opening. The rotation of the 49 mm Grade 5 Titanium case is only liberated when the “X” is in the open position. The case can then be flipped over and locked again by closing the “X”. Quite naturally, the “X” is designed in such a way that all the features of the watch remain perfectly readable even when the bonnet is in its closed position.

The X-Watch houses DeWitt’s third 100% in-house manufactured movement, Calibre DW 8046. One single reversible movement displaying bi-retrograde hours and minutes on each side and featuring an automatic Tourbillon, a Chronograph and a patented Automatic Sequential Winding (A.S.W.) device driven by a peripheral oscillating rotor. Built out of some 535 components, the calibre DW 8046 is the perfect illustration of the inventive audacity of DeWitt’s master watchmakers.

The peripheral oscillating rotor is attached to a ring with a sinusoidal profile on its inner edge. This particular shape will, in turn, activate the patented A.S.W system which enables the movement to always operate in an ideal functioning range, between 92 and 96% of the main-spring torque. The main gear-train is therefore guaranteed to always receive a constant and stable flow of energy thanks to the sequenced winding of the barrel.

Indeed, two little arms, rocking up and down the sinusoidal profile, ensure the winding of the barrel until it reaches 96% of the movement’s full winding. At that moment, a lever disengages the pawl from winding the barrel and forces it to continue its movement in the air, without hooking on to the wheel. The movement then runs on its reserves of energy, until it reaches 92%, and the pawl hooks back on. Such a technical prowess enables to obtain an ideal functioning range with the usage of a single, manual-type barrel. Moreover, it avoids all the running defects observed when slip-springs are used on conventional automatic calibres.

The upper side of the dial is adorned in its centre with a rhodium plated and polished applique in the shape of an hourglass. In its upper part, a window displays a 120 degree power reserve indicator, an indispensable feature to observe the short back and forth movement of the hand when the watch is operating in its ideal functioning range and the A.S.W. is in action

In the lower part, the actual motor of this unidentified flying object is revealed through a nicely proportioned opening. A small seconds hand is attached to the Tourbillon cage and gently glides round. The hourglass applique is also decorated with the “DeWitt” logo, and elegant vertical lines remind us of the finishing given to the peripheral rotor (visible on the other side). In the background, a nice atmosphere is given by a sunray guilloche pattern that radiates right out to the two retrograde counters. The hours and minutes hands are rhodium plated and positioned on the same axis. Both hours and minutes are read from bottom to top, with the hours West and the minutes East. When the “X”-shaped bonnet is closed, everything remains, except the mere symbol of passage of time, the hourglass.

On the lower side of the dial, operating on the same movement, a skeleton chronograph with disk seconds indication and a 3-arm minutes hand covering a 30 minute time span on 3 different levels. The peripheral oscillating rotor, streamlined and with elegant rose gold finishings, travels freely around the dial and is a marvel to observe. Since the crown and the two chronograph push-pieces must remain on the right hand side, the watch itself is turned by 180 degrees. The disk seconds indication, placed underneath the Tourbillon, is therefore now positioned in the upper part of the dial. A polished and rhodium plated cover is placed over the disk, leaving only a small window opening to display the passing seconds. The cover is also decorated with the “DeWitt” logo. The minutes, in the lower part of the dial and printed on the sapphire glass, are positioned on 3 different levels. A 3-arm rose gold hand with small disks on each tip covers the three 10-minute levels in a single rotation.

In order to best valorise this skeleton side of the movement and its sporty twist, a blackened nickel silver plate 0.9 mm thick and with no less than 58 holes had to be placed in the middle of the movement to separate both sides. On this side of the watch, the positioning of the two retrograde hours and minutes hands on one single axis is also revealed. However, hours and minutes are now read from top to bottom.

DeWitt Twenty-8-Eight Tourbillon

[Press Release] The DeWitt calibre DW8028 is a manually wound movement integrating a solid and reliable Tourbillon mechanism.

Its construction is rather classical, using age-old and recognized technical parameters as a basis: 18’000 A/h, 72 hours power reserve.

The movement is equipped with a Swiss anchor escapement with a variable-inertia balance and a spiral with a Breguet curve sequenced at 2.5 Hz.

The balance, as well as the escape wheel and the anchor are made of 18 carat yellow gold.

The Twenty-8-Eight Tourbillon fully complies with the very demanding finishing norms of the DeWitt Manufacture. Entirely hand-made, the finishing is here of a rare quality and can be observed through the sapphire crystal back.

Meticulously angled, polished and satin-finished, the barrel and cage-bridges are finely decorated with Côtes de Genève. Also, two miniature “W” signatures are to be found on the crown and on the golden buckle.

A little plate, bearing the signature of the master watchmaker and placed on the barrel-bridge, further witnesses the pride and affection put into the creation of each timepiece. A direct connection is therefore established between the client and the watchmaker behind his work of art.

Indeed, one particularity ofDeWitt, so essential to the final quality achieved for the product, is that every watch is entirely assembled, adjusted and tested by a single master watchmaker, from A to Z.

Dewitt Golden Afternoon

[Press Release] With the Golden Afternoon collection, DeWitt poetically celebrates women in all their beauty. The collection name is inspired by Lewis Carroll, who improvised the Alice in Wonderland story to entertain the three Liddell sisters, Lorina, Alice and Edith during a boat trip from Oxford to Godstow.

The Golden Afternoon is a purely feminine 39 mm timepiece housing an automatic calibre with 42 hours power reserve. A classical feature of most DeWitt watches, the imperial columns were redesigned for the Golden Afternoon collection and illustrate feminine finesse. They can also be seen as twelve little doors opening up onto a beautiful garden, just as the many doors that Alice faced down in the Rabbit hole. The bezel is decorated with 84 brilliant-cut diamonds (~ 1.02 Cts) regularly positioned by groups of seven between each column. The delicate central wristband “attaches” are set with another 48 brilliant-cut diamonds (~ 0.34 Cts). As for the crown, it was also redesigned into softer shapes and is decorated with a blue sapphire or a ruby cabochon. A golden pin buckle, polished and with a fine engraving of the DeWitt logo provides additional finesse to the finishing. The Golden Afternoon is available in three variations: 18k Rose Gold and Chocolate Mother of Pearl (Ref. NL.LS.53.L002), 18k White Gold and White Mother of Pearl (Ref. NL.LS.48.L003), and 18k White Gold and Black Mother of Pearl (Ref. NL.MS.48.L004).

The 18k White Gold and Black Mother of Pearl (Ref. NL.MS.48.L004) version is a mature combination of tonalities that presents a powerful and intense contrast of white gold and black mother of pearl. The dial is a garden of black mother-of-pearl decorated with randomly planted flowers of different sizes and colours, while 11 diamond hourmarkers seem to float like water lilies around the base of the flange. The dial is also set with four rubies and 152 brilliant-cut diamonds on the side of the case (~ 0.81 Cts). The crown is finely decorated with 24 brilliant-cut diamonds of three different diameters (~ 0.07 Cts). This version displays a total 287 diamonds for a total of 2.17 carats.

DeWitt Twenty-8-Eight Regulator A.S.W. Horizons

[Press Release] DeWitt’s Twenty-8-Eight Regulator A.S.W. Horizons, by its design and inspiration, intends to pay tribute to Art Déco design, and in particular to the post Great Depression trends explored in America.

The scene for this new DeWitt creation is therefore the majestic New York, in its inspired and thriving 1930’s.

A new and modern city, where cultures meet and different times cross paths. Where stone and iron are put together.

Where modern bridges echo the cathedrals of the old world.

An audacious city, where dreams can be made reality and architectural masterpieces flourish freely.

The new Twenty-8-Eight Regulator A.S.W. Horizons is home to the already famous calibre DW 8014, that made sensation when first revealed at Baselworld 2010.

This new automatic Tourbillon is the first complicated regulator movement integrating a Tourbillon entirely developed and produced by the DeWitt Manufacture.

Most importantly, it introduces a patented and extremely ingenious Automatic Sequential Winding (A.S.W) device, driven by a peripheral oscillating rotor.
