Oris RAID 2011 Alarm

Ooh, now this is an Oris that I really do like!

The RAID 2011 Alarm has come about due to Oris’s association as the official timekeeper and watch partner of the RAID Suisse-Paris, which assembles pre-1975 classic cars for a rally covering almost 1,000 km.

The dial takes its cue from the dashboard of the classic English Austin Healey 100M.

The watch is a 50 piece limited edition 42.5mm piece in stainless steel.

It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back, and is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is a Swiss automatic with alarm module developed by Oris.

MSRP is 7,800 Swiss Francs.

Good job Oris!

Only Watch 2011 – Full Auction Results

The Only Watch 2011 Auction in Monaco is over and the results are now in.

Overall, the standout of the event was the Patek Philippe, Ref. 3939, which went for a staggering 1.4 Million Euros (around US$1.9million).

Eighteen pieces failed to reach their minimum estimate, but that said the auction still raised well over US$4million for its muscular dystrophy charity.

Definitely not too shabby in this difficult economic climate.

Full estimates, results and a reminder of some of the models are available after the jump.

Celsius X VI II For Only Watch 2011

Err, right.

Well, let’s look on the positive side – this is all in the name of charity.

And with that, the ..

[Press Release] A first glance of the date display on the edge of the “watch” flap creates an instant, all-pervasive sense of mystery. The date numbers appears on a small screen, as if emerging from nowhere. They are in fact inscribed on a rotating cylinder nestled at the heart of the micromechanical movement, and they are projected thanks to the properties of optical fibres that conduct light and are perfectly suited to this endoscopic exploration dreamed up by Celsius X VI II. They are also involved in the dual timezone display where they create a magnifying effect on the hour numerals.

Conceived by Celsius X VI II and developed by Chronode, the watch movement of this exceptional object is based on a high-performance calibre powering the hours, minutes and pointer-type 50- hour power-reserve display functions, as well as the innovative date and dual timezone indications. It incorporates a visible regulating organ combined with an original index and the fascinating “Remontage Papillon” invented and patented by Celsius X VI II. The latter is in fact an automatic winding system housed in the hinge of the nomadic object and which supplies 2,23 hours of energy with each opening and closing. Also featured are the micromechanical inventions that endow this cellphone with incomparable charm and prestige: battery-injection, a main connector protected by a mechanical-locking flap, and cushioned screen-flap closing.

Like its forerunner, LeDIX, this unique object is equipped with a top-quality and particularly longlasting French electronic communications platform. It notably incorporates a form of voice transfer technology that is regarded as fully mature, with no risk of obsolescence for decades to come. Extremely user-friendly thanks to an interface pared down to essentials, this intensely personal creation is crafted from noble and functional materials such as PVD-treated titanium, quartz fibre and rubber. All of which represented a major challenge for the designers who had to resolve the various interference issues engendered by such associations.

Distinguished by its sleek, flowing lines inspired by the world of Formula 1 motor-racing, refined finishes characteristic of haute horlogerie models, and colours echoing those of Monaco, the elegant style of Celsius X VI II is immediately apparent. The Only Watch model comes with the exclusive accessories created by the brand: LaBase (docking station), LeKit, the no-hands kit secured by a tie-pin style clip, LeFourreau, LaChaîne and LeHolster – all neatly presented in the ebony wood presentation box called LeCoffret and composed of three mechanically opening compartments.

Franck Muller Totally Switzerland For Only Watch 2011

[Press Release]The Franck Muller brand was founded in 1991 by Franck Muller and by Vartan Sirmakes with the aim of creating exclusives timepieces characterised by complicated movements and original designs. In less than twenty years, the company has experienced an extraordinary growth thanks to the creation of wonderful collections which have earned the Group the title Master of Complications.

The manufacture prides itself on its capacity of perpetuating the great tradition of “Horlogerie” by creating and developing incredible complications never seen before. Its ability consists of launching watches which are Masterpieces in terms of designs and precise mechanisms. All the time pieces are conceived within the Swiss watchmaking tradition. These are just a few of the accomplishments of an international success story.

Since the beginning of Only Watch Franck Muller has always considered essential to intervene for such an important cause. Once again the brand is proud to participate in the Only Watch Auction which funds will be totally transferred to the Monégasque Myopathie Association. This year the brand has decided to present one of its most famous watches, the Crazy Hours. This model is the realisation of a totally innovative approach to the very concept of time. It establishes a new philosophy by demonstrating our independence from the established order of time. The numerals of the Crazy Hours dial reveal the hours in an original order, with which everyone associates their own values. The hour hand jumps every time that the minute hand completes its revolution, a new crazy way to read time.

For the occasion a very special dial was created in order to represent the Swiss residents of Monaco, who make up one of the biggest communities in the Rocher. The colours used were specially selected to symbolise at the same time Helvetica and the Monte-Carlo principality.

Through this time piece Franck Muller hopes to transmit all of its creativity as well as the precious savoir-faire of Swiss watchmaking. Therefore, utilizing the watch as a symbol of Switzerland both a concept in itself and as a nationalistic sentiment exhibited by the helvetique flag displayed in the dial design. It is with great pride that Franck Muller offers the world, on behalf of the Swiss population, the opportunity to partake in this exceptional heritage.

Laurent Ferrier Galet Micro-Rotor for Only Watch 2011

You may have thought we were done with the Only Watch 2011 entrants, but no – there’s more to come :-)

Here’s Laurent Ferrier’s entry:

[Press Release] Laurent Ferrier has chosen for the second time to join in supporting the cause of research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This strongly debilitating degenerative neuromuscular disease affects 250,000 people around the world, meaning one in 3,500.

The Only Watch event orchestrated by Antiquorum will take place during the Monaco Yacht Show under the patronage of H.S.R. Prince Albert II. As was the case in previous editions, the greatest watch companies generously donate a unique piece from their collection that will be put up for auction. The money raised from this sale will help to fund medical research.

In keeping with the Only Watch spirit, which offers collectors pieces representing authentic horological innovations, Laurent Ferrier is offering a symbolic watch for this event, thereby demonstrating its commitment to important causes. He has chosen to interpret the Galet Micro-Rotor, the latest addition to his collection, in an entirely original version: a steel case framing a chestnut brown dial with a guilloché-worked flinqué motif. Alongside its aesthetic appeal, this model is doubly unique in that it is the prototype of the final test phases that vividly demonstrated the exceptional performances of this unprecedented winding system.

This movement is housed within a pebble-shaped steel case enhanced by a “ball-shaped” winding-crown. The chestnut brown dial, guilloché-worked with a flinqué motif, is punctuated by a small seconds display at 6 o’clock. Over it glide “assegai-shaped”, gold hour and minute hands and a baton-shaped seconds hand. It ensures perfect readability thanks to the graphical arrangement of the applied “teardrop” hour-markers and the beaded minute track.

The exceptional finishing of the movement is in keeping with the finest watchmaking traditions. In addition to the Côtes de Genève motif on the bridges and the circular graining on the mainplate, the flanks are hand-drawn with a file, the wheel spokes are bevelled, the screw heads are polished, and the interior angles are hand-crafted with a burin. The micro-rotor bridge is also manually polished. The inscription “ONLY WATCH 2011” is engraved on the off-centred oscillating weight, while the barrel-bridge bears the words “PROTOTYPE N°1”. The sapphire crystal case-back provides a fascinating view of this fine workmanship and reveals its innovative structure.

The Galet Micro-Rotor is the second 100% in-house made calibre comprising technological innovations including:

- A unidirectional micro-pawl fitted automatic winding system fixed between the mainplate and the bridge of the micro-rotor;

- A silicon escapement with double direct impulse directly on the balance;

- A silent-bloc shock-absorbing system for the micro-rotor.

Thanks to the new construction combined with cutting-edge materials, Laurent Ferrier thereby maximises the energy efficiency and makes the most of the advantages procured by an off-centred micro-rotor. This movement features exceptional timekeeping qualities. Only a few dozen calibres of this type will be produced each year. Only Watch 2011 will have the privilege of offering one to its well-informed audience on behalf of a noble cause.

Timex Summer 2011 Weekender Collection

A touch of Timex news now. The Summer 2011 Weekender Collection features a range of colourful new straps.

And that’s about it really.

Funny how Timex watches are both (mostly) cheap and relatively low-end, and yet kind of trendy at the same time isn’t it?

I’m still looking for that 80s Golf model ..
