Arnold & Son True Beat Seconds

[Press Release] The TBR is the first timepiece in the new Instrument Collection from Arnold & Son and features the first automatic movement with an integrated true beat system to be developed, designed and manufactured entirely at the workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Its pure, timeless design takes its inspiration from the later instrument-style chronometers produced by John Roger Arnold. These answered the call for timepieces rugged and reliable enough to withstand the hardships of life on the high seas combined with the down-to-the-second precision needed by marine navigators to determine longitude.

With the unmistakable design cues that define the family, the TBR is a masterpiece of reduced simplicity. The initials stand for the watch’s two complications, true beat and retrograde. While the time is displayed in an off-centre subdial at 9 o’clock – a hallmark of the entire Instrument Collection – the two complications occupy the middle of the dial and command the front of the stage.

Dominating the face of the watch is the central true beat – or independent – seconds. The true beat seconds – a hark-back to the precision required by navigators on the high seas – is a rarely found complication these days, and its combination with an automatic winding system calls for enormous technical expertise. In the TBR it was made possible by a worldwide patented system comprising a sophisticated double wheel, an oscillating pinion and a pallet mechanism. This complex solution calls for virtually microscopic precision (to tolerances of a micron, or one thousandth of a millimetre) and the key parts are made using state-of-the-art LIGA fabrication technology. LIGA is a German acronym that stands for Lithographie, Galvanoformung, Abformung – lithography, electroplating and moulding – and describes the sequence of processes used to produce metal parts made of nickel and nickel phosphorus.

Frederique Constant Double Heart Beat Black Beauty

And you thought Black Beauty was just a horse.  Think again!

[Press Release] The new Black Beauty adds deep black mother of pearl to Frederique Constant’s bestselling Double Heart Beat collection. The Double Heart Beat collection features two intertwined hearts forming an aperture in the dial revealing the ‘heart beat’ of the Calibre FC-310 automatic movement. The balance wheel beats 28’800 times per hour and rotates clockwise and counter clockwise on its axes in a large ruby jewel. Its rotation is controlled by the hairspring, which constantly coils and uncoils, and can be seen through the open eye of the Heart Beat watches.

The Double Heart Beat collection is “Assembled by hand to touch your heart” and Frederique Constant stands behind this slogan by donating US$50 from each watch sale to charities for children and fighting heart disease. Frederique Constant donated two cheques in the value of US$ 50’000 (2008) and US$ 75’000 (2011) to the International Children’s Heart Foundation, a passionate organization that brings skills, technology and knowledge to diagnose and care for children with congenital heart disease to developing countries. In 2009, Frederique Constant funded Paint a Smile’s bid to decorate the Beijing Children’s Cardiology Department and put smiles on the faces of children dealing with heart-related issues. In 2010, Frederique Constant awarded the American Heart Association with a US$50,000 check for their charitable efforts to prevent heart disease and stroke. In 2011, Frederique Constant held a benefit for the Hong Kong Children’s Heart Foundation with Chinese actress ShuQi to support the cause of children with congenital heart problems. This year, Frederique Constant will continue to provide support to heart and children related charities by donating a major cheque to a charitable cause.

Frederique Constant Heart Beat Manufacture GMT Automatic

A day for pruning the million open tabs I have (news backlog) and email press releases.

Making some small progress, but wanted to end tonight – Australian time – with the rather nice Frederique Constant Heart Beat Manufacture GMT Automatic.

Press release after the picture ..

[Press Release] Frédérique Constant Genève is proud to introduce its new Heart Beat Manufacture GMT Automatic. In the continuing tradition and legacy of the Heart Beat Collection, the new Heart Beat Manufacture GMT Automatic is an expression of watch making at its best. Integrating ingenious craftsmanship and know-how of prestigious Swiss watch making.

The new collection comprises of six models. Each model is a limited edition of 1,888 pieces for the stainless steel versions and 188 pieces for the 18K gold versions, all delivered in a luxurious wooden gift box. The calibre ticking inside each Heart Beat Manufacture GMT (cal FC-938) has a new second time zone functionality, a 42-hour power reserve, a diameter of 30.50mm, sports 27 jewels, KIF anti-shock system, Glucydur balance and a Nivarox balance spring. Bridges of the movement are decorated with Côtes de Genève and perlage, and have anglage and rhodiage finishing. Each dial has a second time zone counter and day/night indicator at 12 o’clock position, Heart Beat aperture at 6 o’clock position, and black oxidized hands. Its practical design lends itself to adjust the time zones through the crown, preventing the usage of a separate pusher. Turn the crown clockwise, to set both time zones, turn the crown counter-clockwise, and only the central hands will move.

The history of Frédérique Constant’s Heart Beat Collection dates back to 1994. The purpose of the Heart Beat was to distinguish mechanical Frédérique Constant watches from their battery-operated counterparts. The watches have a dial aperture at the position of the balance wheel to show that the movement inside is mechanical. The balance wheel beats 28,800 times per hour. The balance wheel rotates clockwise and counter clockwise on its axis in a large ruby jewel. Its rotation is controlled by the hairspring, which constantly coils and uncoils, and is visible through the open eye of the Heart Beat. In 2004, Frederique Constant entered in to the elite circle of Swiss watch brands that develop and produce their movements in-house. To this day, no other Swiss, classical watch brand in the Accessible Luxury-segment has achieved a similar development of producing its own movement.

Frédérique Constant continues to push the boundaries of watch making further. Through its in-house movements the brand displays an exceptional level of sophistication and a drive to innovate in the field of technical know-how and movement production.
