Ulysse Nardin Black Sea Chronograph

[Press Release] As authoritative as a steel-colored sea during a storm, the new Ulysse Nardin Black Sea Chronograph offers a commanding presence and the unfaltering reliability expected from master diver watchmakers. Below the water’s surface or on solid ground, this timepiece guides its wearers with exacting precision and endurance.

Steering divers to depths of 200 meters and sporting a rubberized screw crown for added water-resistance, the Black Sea Chronograph features Superluminova on the dial for sharp, luminescent visibility in the darkest of places. Another beneficial component is the unidirectional turning bezel.

Enhancing its ability to withstand the most challenging environments are the materials from which it is constructed. Its 45.8 mm diameter case is made from stainless steel coated with rubber and finished with a sapphire glass case back. Its buckle, as well as other segments of the watch, is crafted from ceramic, while its rubber strap brings comfort and flexibility.

Black Sea Chronograph also presents a special personalized chronograph seconds hand adorned with the iconic Ulysse Nardin anchor. The permanent seconds indicator is at the 3 o’clock position, while 9 o’clock marks the 30 minutes counter. The date is located at 4 o’clock, and 6 o’clock indicates a 12-hour counter detailed with a red and blue hand. Rubberized pushers offer ease when a hurried start or stop function is necessary.

Complementing its functionality and strength is its styling. Monochromatic in rich black with accents of blue and red, Black Sea Chronograph is masculine, as it is elegant. It is the ideal timepiece to accompany the bespoke and diving suit, alike. Black Sea Chronograph is for the man who counts the hours before he can return to the sea.

Hamilton Ventura XXL

Fifty-five years after they released the original version, Hamilton have launched an updated limited edition of their Venture XXL.

It’s being released in conjunction with the risable Men In Black III movie, but don’t hold that against it – this 46mm piece in stainless steel is still pretty cool.

Eschewing the original’s battery power (a first for that time), this one uses an ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. This partly explains the much larger size than that which Elvis made famous, back in the day.

Retail should be around the $1400 mark.

Raymond Weil Freelancer Urban Black [Baselworld 2012]

Back to Earth somewhat now, and the new Freelancer Urban Black from Raymond Weil.

Based around the ETA 7750 movement – the actual reference is the 46 hour reserve RW5000 – this stainless steel black PVD piece is 42mm in size.

It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal water resistance to 100 meters.

Apparently, the case features a special anti-fingerprint finish (is that a big problem with PVD coating?).

Tudor Heritage Black Bay Diver [Baselworld 2012]

Park your Tudor-snobbery for just a second, this is a really rather nice example of a 1950s remake.

Relatively small for a modern diving watch, but more appropriate for the era, at 41mm this one comes in a stainless steel case.

It has a domed sapphire crystal and water resistance to 200 meters.

The watch comes wearing an aged brown leather strap or steel bracelet with folding clasp and safety catch.

You also get a second black fabric strap with Tudor buckle – I like that one.

What do you think?

Rodania Xseba Black Edition [Baselworld 2012]

Let’s continue our theme of news from lesser-known brands with something from Rodania now.

Lesser-known perhaps, but this Swiss brand has been around since the 1930s, so they’re certainly not newbies to the game! :-)

The Xseba features an ETA 7750 movement (‘classic’ 7750 day/date layout included).

It’s a 44mm piece, in either stainless steel black PVD or 18kt rose gold.

There’s double sapphire crystals and water resistance to 100 meters.

Certina DS Multi-8 All Black

I quite like the Certina Multi-8: it appeals to the inner geek.

This ‘All Black’ version is a step-up IMHO – with its black PVD stainless case, black face and ‘carbon-esque’ black strap.

It’s a 42mm piece with a sapphire crystal and water resistance to 100 meters.

Movement is a quartz (ETA caliber E49.351) which might not appeal to all, but the price is a manageable $850 – give or take discounts.

Digital functions include: T1 and T2 time zones, including alarms; acoustic and vibro warning; timer with the same warnings; day, date, calendar week, month, year and chronograph with lap time and memory.

Frederique Constant Double Heart Beat Black Beauty

And you thought Black Beauty was just a horse.  Think again!

[Press Release] The new Black Beauty adds deep black mother of pearl to Frederique Constant’s bestselling Double Heart Beat collection. The Double Heart Beat collection features two intertwined hearts forming an aperture in the dial revealing the ‘heart beat’ of the Calibre FC-310 automatic movement. The balance wheel beats 28’800 times per hour and rotates clockwise and counter clockwise on its axes in a large ruby jewel. Its rotation is controlled by the hairspring, which constantly coils and uncoils, and can be seen through the open eye of the Heart Beat watches.

The Double Heart Beat collection is “Assembled by hand to touch your heart” and Frederique Constant stands behind this slogan by donating US$50 from each watch sale to charities for children and fighting heart disease. Frederique Constant donated two cheques in the value of US$ 50’000 (2008) and US$ 75’000 (2011) to the International Children’s Heart Foundation, a passionate organization that brings skills, technology and knowledge to diagnose and care for children with congenital heart disease to developing countries. In 2009, Frederique Constant funded Paint a Smile’s bid to decorate the Beijing Children’s Cardiology Department and put smiles on the faces of children dealing with heart-related issues. In 2010, Frederique Constant awarded the American Heart Association with a US$50,000 check for their charitable efforts to prevent heart disease and stroke. In 2011, Frederique Constant held a benefit for the Hong Kong Children’s Heart Foundation with Chinese actress ShuQi to support the cause of children with congenital heart problems. This year, Frederique Constant will continue to provide support to heart and children related charities by donating a major cheque to a charitable cause.

Saint Honore Opéra Black Eclair

Wooo – sparkly!

Apparently ‘Eclair’ is a special technique that creates the dazzling effect of pavé diamonds.

Available in 37 or 33mm sizes.

That’s not important though .. just look at the shiny thing!

Tsovet SVT Black Automatic

At $1795 this one is definitely at the pricey end of the Tsovet-scale.

It is though a 25-piece limited edition model, and contains an automatic movement – something most Tsovets do not.

At a chunky 48mm, this stainless steel black PVD piece comes with an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a display back and water resistance to 100 meters.

The aforementioned automatic movement is a Swiss ETA caliber 2824 with 25 jewels.

What do you think?  I’m tempted to say that this still seems rather expensive – limited edition or not.

Do you agree?

Victorinox Swiss Army Alpnach Black Ice Chronograph

Take a step-up then Victorinox, with your ballistic strap enabled ‘Alpnach Black Ice Chronograph’.

Even the name sounds tough, doesn’t it?

This 44mm piece has a stainless steel black PVD case.

It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a display back, and is water resistant to 100 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic ETA caliber Valjoux 7750 with 25 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 40 hours.
