Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute

[Press Release]Wilton, Conn. (May 25, 2012) – Luxury Swiss watchmaker Breitling honored the 50th anniversary of U.S. Astronaut Scott Carpenter’s voyage into Space on-board Aurora 7 with the debut of the Limited Edition Navitimer Cosmonaute timepiece at an exclusive celebration for VIPs and customers on Thurs., May 24 at their U.S. Flagship Boutique in New York.

U.S. Astronauts Scott Carpenter and Captain Mark Kelly and Russian Cosmonaute Sergey Volkov celebrated at the boutique, which was transformed into outer space in honor of the event. A 10 foot tall replica of the Aurora 7 capsule was created for the memorable evening. The walls were covered in 26 foot tall graphic images of Scott Carpenter from his voyage in 1962. Models boasted revealing, astronaut -inspired, costumes in Breitling’s signature colors. Satellite parties with a live feed from the New York boutique took also place at the Breitling Boutique in Aventura, Florida and Lewis Diamonds & Timepieces in Texas.

The event was held to commemorate May 24, 1962, when a Breitling Navitimer chronograph became the first wrist instrument to share in the conquest of space by accompanying the Aurora 7 flight. “In 1962, I saw Australian pilots wearing a Breitling Navitimer, which had a unique feature at the time – a circular slide rule – a tool used often in flight for navigation and communication. I asked Breitling to create a special version of the watch for me with a 24 hour dial so I was able to tell the time in space, whether it was day or night since it’s always dark. To have them honor me 50 years later with a custom watch in my honor is extremely special,” said Scott Carpenter.

Thierry Prissert, Breitling USA President presented Scott Carpenter with the #1 of 1,962 pieces. “We are extremely proud to have shared in this accomplishment and thrilled to celebrate Mr. Carpenter and all he has done for the Aerospace program.

It was a great privilege to present him with the watch,” said Prissert.

The Limited Edition Navitimer Cosmonaute made its debut at the event to excited crowds. The watch features manufactured movement, entirely developed and produced in house.

This 1,962-piece limited edition is distinguished by its 24-hour display, manual winding mode – two nods to the original 1962 chronograph – as well as the Aurora 7 mission insignia engraved on the case back.

The Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute watch is available for purchase at retailers throughout the United States and at the Breitling Boutiques in New York, New York and Aventura, Florida.

Breitling Colt 33

A bunch of Breitlings, with colours for everyone (assuming you’re not a a quartzaphobe that is).

The Colt 33 is so called due to its diminutive 33mm size.

It comes in stainless steel, has an AR coated sapphire crystal and water resistance to a more than decent 500 meters.

Movement is a quartz Breitling caliber 77.

This is a thermocompensated, COSC-certified chronometer and features an end of life battery indicator.

Breitling Transocean QP Perpetual Calendar

I’m not suggesting this is a ‘sleeper’ piece, but it’s certainly true that it’s both reasonably sized – 43mm – and packed with clever complications.

Have a good look at the dial (or just the name of the watch ;-) ) and you’ll see evidence of such: date, day, week, month, season and moon phases.  Oh, and it handles leap years happily too.

The movement behind this is the Breitling caliber 29.  This has 38 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 42 hours.

There’ll only be 50 of these made – 25 in a silver dial, 25 in black.

The case is in 18kt rose gold.  There’s an AR-coated sapphire crystal and water resistance to 50 meters.

Very nice indeed :-)

Breitling Transocean Chronograph Unitime [Baselworld 2012]

Breitling make some great watches.  Many of them aren’t exactly what you’d call ‘subtle’ though.

Thankfully, fans of something a little more refined looking to wear something from the big ‘B’ may have some salvation in the form of this beautiful Transocean Chrono Unitime.

This is a 46mm piece in steel or 18kt rose gold. It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 100 meters. Dials can be had in black or Polar white.

Movement is the new in-house  automatic Breitling Caliber 05.  It’s a COSC-certified chronometer running at 28,000vph with 56 jewels and a 70-hour power reserve.

Features include a 1/4th second chronograph, 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers, world time and calendar.

Strap options include Barenia leather, crocodile leather/Ocean Classic (steel mesh, steel version only).

I love the mesh steel/mesh combo – look fantastic!

Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of love for the painted globe over on the Breitling forums.  I don’t mind it at all: what do you think?

One thing we may all not like though is the price .. north of 10K by all accounts :-(

Here’s what Breitling have to say about this piece:

[Press Release] Breitling reasserts its horological mastery by launching a “world time” chronograph equipped with a new caliber entirely developed and produced in-house. Thanks to its double disk, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime simultaneously and constantly indicates the time in all 24 timezones. An innovative system based on a patented mechanism enables the user, when changing timezone, to adjust all the indications in one smooth and easy move by simply turning the crown. An exceptional new instrument makes its grand entry into the world of exclusive fine mechanisms.

While the chronograph and instruments for professionals have established themselves since 1884 as Breitling’s domain of excellence, travel watches have also played an important role in the history of the brand with the winged B. In sharing the finest hours in the conquest of the skies, Breitling accompanied the boom in air transport and long-distance travel. During the 1950s and 60s, the brand distinguished itself by introducing a sophisticated model named Unitime, a selfwinding “world time” watch that has since become a much sought-after collector’s item. Today, Breitling is further extending its invitation to enjoy travel and performances by combining universal time and the chronograph function within a new model in the Transocean range – a collection reflecting all the refinement and prestige of luxury long-distance journeys. Associating innovative technology with stylish aesthetics, the Transocean Chronograph Unitime is distinguished by its modern, pure lines and the infinite care lavished on the smallest details – such as its dial bearing a globe pattern. It comes in steel or red gold versions with the city bezel available in several languages. That unmistakable first-class feeling on the wrist.

In creating Caliber 01, the Breitling engineers devised the world’s best chronograph movement. In developing the new Caliber 05, based on the same high-performance architecture, they have also reinvented the world time mechanism by equipping it with an adjustment system boasting unprecedented user friendliness. The Transocean Chronograph Unitime features two mobile disks: a 24-hour disk and a disk bearing the names of 24 cities representing the world’s 24 timezones. The time shown by the central hands corresponds to that of the timezone displayed at 12 o’clock. The city disk also bears indications serving to take account of “summer” or daylight saving time (DST).

When the user changes timezone, he need only pull out the crown and turn it forwards or backwards in one-hour increments in order to correct the hours, the city disk and the 24-hour disk in one smooth move. Meanwhile, the calendar is easily adjusted in both directions to the date corresponding to local time. During these maneuvers, the minute and seconds hands continue turning normally without any loss of precision, and without perturbing any chronograph timing operations in progress.

Breitling for Bentley GMT V8 [Baselworld 2012]

Here’s one for the Russian oligarchs and hip-hop mavens amongst our readership (a large part of our demographic, I’m sure).

The Breitling for Bentley GMT V8 will be made in a limited 250 piece run as a tribute to, you guessed it, the new Bentley Continental GT V8.

In stainless steel, this is a 49mm piece powered by the Breitling caliber 47B COSC-certified movement.

This has 39 jewels and beats at 28,800 vph.

Power reserve is a ho-hum 48 hours.

Functions are 1/8th second chronograph, 6-hour, 15-minute and 30-second totalizers and a 24-hour second timezone display.

Not, I’d expect, that most buyers would really care about all of that :-)

Breitling Chronomat 44 GMT [Baselworld 2012]

Do not adjust your eyes: that really is a big square in the middle of the dial.

That’s the Chronomat for you – although this one is a tiddler compared with the original – having been ‘shrunk’ to 44mm from 47mm.

This one gives you a third timezone, courtesy of the rotating bezel.

What else do you get?

Glad you asked!

An AR-coated sapphire crystal; water resistance to 200 meters and an in-house COSC-certified automatic movement.

The latter features 47 jewels, 28,000 vph and a power reserve of 70 hours.

A number of variants will be available: dials in Onyx Black, Metallica Blue, Blackeye Blue, Blackeye Gray, Sierra Silver, and Metallica Brown.

Strap/bracelet combos in Barenia leather, crocodile, rubber Ocean Racer (perforated), rubber Diver Pro (with raised central ridge) and Pilot bracelet.

Phew!

Breitling Colt 44mm

Breitling watches are nothing if not chunky, and this new 44mm Colt range doesn’t disappoint.

Available in a chrono and non-chronograph version, you can actually get the non-chrono in a daintier 33mm version if you prefer something a bit more manageable (or are a ‘laydeee’).

The non-chrono is a stainless steel piece with a Swiss SuperQuartz Caliber 74 movement.  This movement is thermo-compensated with a battery end-of-life indicator and calendar function.

It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 500 meters.

Dials are available in Volcano Black, Stratus Silver, and Gun Blue.

Strap options include leather, rubber Ocean Racer, rubber Diver Pro (with raised central ridge) and Professional bracelet.

As for the chronograph, this too is a stainless steel piece with a Swiss SuperQuartz Caliber 73 movement.  This is officially chronometer-certified by the COSC and thermocompensated with fast timezone adjustment.

There’s a 1/10th of a second chronograph, 60-minute and 12-hour totalizers with split times (split-second hand) and calendar function.

It also has an AR-coated sapphire crystal but loses a couple of hundred meters water resistance – down to a still very acceptable 300 meters.

Movement is the Swiss SuperQuartz Caliber 73, officially chronometer-certified by the COSC, thermocompensated with fast timezone adjustment. 1/10th of a second chronograph, 60-minute and 12-hour totalizers with split times (split-second hand) and calendar function.

The same dial and strap options apply as per the non-chrono version.
