Jaeger-LeCoultre Celebrates Raffles Hotel Singapore’s 125th Anniversary

[Press Release] (July 2012) There are a few hotels in the world whose names have become virtually synonymous with the cities in which they are located – and none more so than Raffles Hotel in Singapore.

Named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, Raffles started out as a 10-room bungalow, 125 years ago. Over the next 20 years it grew to become the landmark that it is today – and the haunt of tycoons, rogues, adventurers, movie stars, authors and journalists. Visiting writers included Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham and Noel Coward, a host of foreign correspondents – all of whom fed in the stories and legends, fact and fiction, which have clung to the hotel ever since. Through their stories, the Long Bar, the Palm Court and the Billiard Room with its tiger, became familiar to people who had never even been to Singapore. Today these stories remain and are relished – but time has not been allowed to stand still at Raffles Hotel.
In September the iconic Raffles Hotel, Singapore, celebrates its 125th anniversary. So what better way to mark this special point in time and Raffles’ continuing story, than to turn to another timeless symbol of good taste and style: Jaeger-LeCoultre, whose own history goes back over nearly 180 years?

The company’s double-sided Reverso watch line is a classic. When its case is turned over, the Reverso is transformed into a jewel that can be personalized forever by an engraving. Now, to mark its 125th, Jaeger-LeCoultre has created an exclusive engraving “Raffles Hotel 1887-2012 Singapore”, available on Gents’ Reverso Grande Taille, and Ladies’ Grande Reverso Lady Ultra Thin.

Pierre Jochem, General Manager of Raffles Hotel commented: “Like Raffles, Jaeger-LeCoultre never stands still – it continues to inspire and surprise. Whether it’s staying in Raffles or wearing a Reverso, style and magic has nothing to do with age. Timelessness is about moving with the times and adapting to the world around us – but never forgetting our heritage, which is priceless.”

Kit-Cat Clocks Celebrates 80th Anniversary In Rose Parade

Ooh, I think I really want a Kit-Cat Clock now :-)

Kit-Cat Clocks have been around since 1932 and are an iconic slice of ‘Americana’.

To celebrate the forthcoming 80th Anniversary, Kit-Cat are releasing a time limited special Rose Float clock, and will be taking part in the 2012 ‘Tournament of Roses’ parade.

A collector’s item, the Rose Float Clock will only be manufactured for one year.

The Rose Float Kit-Cat Clock is 15.5 in. high, 4 in. wide and 2.5 in. deep.

Kit-Cat Clocks can be found in Macy’s Herald Square, the Smithsonian Catalog and in specialty shops, novelty shops and gift shops worldwide.

The Rose Float Kit-Cat Clock will retail at a price of $59.99

Here’s what they have to say about their place in the parade, with some images of the float under construction:

[Press Release] In celebration of the company’s 80th anniversary, Kit-Cat® Clocks will roll down Colorado Boulevard in the 2012 Tournament of Roses® Parade® with an attention-getting entry alive with activity – skateboarders zipping on and off the float, a couple dancing to tunes from a jukebox and eight riders from eight to 80 years old, representing the children, parents, grandparents and great grandparents who have owned and loved a Kit-Cat Clock during the eight decades since the founding of the California Clock Company in 1932.

Aptly named, “Timeless Fun for Everyone,” the 55 ft. long parade entry will be a nostalgic look back at history. Adorning the float will be a 24 ft. high black and white Kit-Cat Clock, with its contagious smile, rolling eyes and swinging tail one of the most recognizable icons in home décor, as well as other flower bedecked images that bring back memories of good times — a chocolate malt from a 40’s soda fountain and a jukebox from the ‘50’s.

“We’re celebrating 80 years since our founding by looking back at how we’ve been part of Americana, continually producing new products that make people smile,” Woody Young, CEO, Kit-Cat Clocks, said. “Everything we do has to be fun.”

Every rider on the float has a story to tell. The skateboarders competed for a chance to be in America’s New Year Celebration®. The stationary riders all sent a personal story of how they came to own a Kit-Cat Clock.

The biggest design challenge for Fiesta Floats was to create a ramp that would allow skateboarders to hop on one side of the float, maneuver up and around a curve or two and then off the float again on the other side, all within the 18 ft. width of the float. The solution was a big S curve, turned on its side.

“We looked at how NASCAR tracks curve and bank,” explains Tim Estes, CEO, Fiesta Floats. “The route across the float had to be exciting for the spectators, but not too dangerous for the skate boarders.”

To handle the task, the athletes will be using a FIZZ board. The FIZZ board has reengineered the 70s banana boards, small, fast, and very agile skateboards that are only about a foot and a half long.

Kit-Cat’s float will also illustrate the company’s California roots. Headquarters for The California Clock Company, home of Kit-Cat Clocks is in Ontario, Calif. The company hires local workers and manufacturers all the parts for its iconic clock line in Southern California. As much as possible, flowers and seeds used to decorate the float will be grown in California, one of the richest agricultural states. Floral icons on the float include several palm trees and birds of paradise plants.

[Press Release] To celebrate its 220th anniversary, the Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacture Girard-Perregaux is setting up a worldwide travelling exhibition of exceptional timepieces from its museum collection and of rare contemporary watches. Conceived as a learning voyage into the spirit and values of the Swiss Haute Horlogerie Manufacture, this exhibition – “A tale of inspiration – Unveiling 220 years of watchmaking Art” – will take the visitor through two centuries of evolution in the art of measuring time while establishing an interesting link with major events, public figures or works of art which have marked world history.

Among the rare timepieces, documents and watchmaking tools presented, one of the highlights of the exhibition will surely be the “Esmeralda”. This masterpiece by Constant Girard-Perregaux is the most famous edition of the Tourbillon with three gold Bridges and was awarded a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.

The public will also meet with some of the Manufacture’s master watchmakers and craftsmen presenting their art and know-how.

This travelling exhibition will stop in:

· Shanghai – Sinan Mansions – from 20th to 23rd October 2011
· New York – Boutique Girard-Perregaux on Madison – from 18th to 26th November 2011

Other exceptional timepieces from the Girard-Perregaux Museum and of the contemporary collections will be presented this autumn in:

Girard-Perregaux, 220 years of watchmaking art
Since 1791, Girard-Perregaux has been reinventing the long tradition of Swiss watchmaking. In its 220 years, the Swiss Manufacture has registered more than 80 patents in the field of watchmaking and has brought legendary creations to life. Today, the Brand is one of the very few to bring together all of the skills and expertise required to produce Haute Horlogerie watches under one roof.

La Esmeralda, watchmaking masterpiece
Several reports of the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889 referred to the outstanding display cases of Girard-Perregaux particularly mentioning an extraordinarily beautiful, high-precision chronometer that impressed all who saw it. Its movement was a technical masterpiece with an original structure, and the sumptuous decoration of its case was an exceptional demonstration of engraving that involved most of the techniques of the art.

This pocket-watch with its fascinating tourbillon movement was later named “La Esmeralda”. Over the months before the International Exhibition, it had achieved some remarkable test results at the Neuchâtel Observatory in Switzerland, attested by the institution’s issue of its rating certificate. Then, at the exhibition, it was awarded a gold medal by the jury who recognised the perfection, both technical and aesthetic, of this extraordinary timepiece.

The watch bears the name of the luxury Mexican boutique of the agents Hauser and Zivy, to whom it was entrusted for a while. Then “La Esmeralda” is thought to have passed into the ownership of the President of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz (1830-1915) who led the country from 1876 to 1911. Finally, at the end of the 1960s, the pocket-chronometer was acquired from the President’s great grandson and it now crowns the collections of the Girard-Perregaux Museum.
