Breguet, CNN And Leonardo da Vinci

[Press Release] Breguet will be sponsoring CNN on both its TV channel and its website for a theme week starting November 7th 2011 and entirely devoted to Leonardo da Vinci.

This exceptional coverage will reveal to the entire world the artist’s last masterpiece,Salvator Mundi, the recently rediscovered painting that will be on show at the National Gallery in London from November 9th 2011 to February 5th 2012.

Breguet has been supporting art and culture for many years through various patronage activities such as those on behalf of the Château de Versailles in the restoration of the Marie-Antoinette’s favourite Petit Trianon domain , as well as endeavours undertaken in cooperation with the Louvre, the New York Philharmonic, and the Ermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The watch brand is thus delighted to be associating with CNN for this major project focusing on the most important artistic discovery of the past 200 years.

This painting entitled Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World) and dating from the early 16th century depicts a figure of Christ holding a transparent orb in one hand and giving his blessing with the other.

The CNN theme week presents this work in great detail and retraces the various stages in its discover and its restoration, thereby turning the spotlight on the stunning work and skill of the Renaissance genius.

The link between this theme week devoted to Leonardo da Vinci and the watch company lies in a model within the Breguet collection; in 2010, Breguet presented one of its new creations, the Tradition Tourbillon 7047PT model incorporating a fusee and chain device serving to provide a constant supply of energy to the balance – a concept invented by Da Vinci in the 1490s.

This partnership offers a fresh opportunity to highlight this world featuring a blend of culture, exceptional accomplishments, technical sophistication and beauty – all values deeply cherished by Breguet.

Only Watch: The Summer World Tour
From August 30 to September 17, the Only Watch 2011 collection will be showcased in a world tour that will visit most of the world’s luxury watch collecting capitals: Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, Milan and Geneva (see detailed world tour schedule below).

The tour will close in Monaco with a two-day exhibition (Sep. 21/22) at the Monaco Yacht Show. The world’s leading Superyacht show is co-organizing Only Watch, together with the Monaco Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Antiquorum.

This impressive world tour is made possible by the support of the following partners: The Hour Glass Singapore, the CITIC Group (for Shanghai and Beijing), The Hour Glass Tokyo, Westime Beverly Hills, the Consulate General of Monaco and the Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York, and Orologeria Verga in Milan.

Only Watch exists only because of the creativity, the time and dedication, the expertise, and the quest for excellence of exceptionally motivated teams devoted to an extraordinary project.
Some of the world’s most innovative and renowned watchmakers have once again volunteered their help to support research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a highly debilitating neuromuscular disease that affects one boy in 3,500 – approximately 250,000 children, teenagers and young adults around the globe.

Since the last edition of Only Watch, in September 2009, 2.5 million Euros were donated to 15 scientific partners and their teams, including 90 researchers and clinicians in 5 countries (France, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States). This is a rare opportunity to contribute effectively to exploring and developing new therapeutic treatments for this disease.

For Luis Garcia, Research Director at the CNRS Paris, who has been working on Duchenne muscular dystrophy for over ten years, Only Watch has played a decisive role in research, giving major financial support. The funds collected at the last auction went to support research that accelerated clinical developments on Duchenne muscular dystrophy over the past two years. Notable among these were the launching of several clinical trials on exon skipping, some of which are already entering phase 3. “For all these research efforts, the synergy of various scientific approaches, co-ordination between the various teams, and collaborative partnerships have all been decisive. In the name of all researchers and clinicians, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the high-end watchmaking industry for its extraordinary collaboration on this fantastic scientific and human project.”

Extracts from a speech by Luc Pettavino, President of the AMM (Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy) and initiator of Only Watch, made at the launching ceremony of Only Watch 2011 (Geneva, Nov. 29, 2010) in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Presidents of the participating watch brands: “Thanks to all those taking part in Only Watch, and in particular to HSH Prince Albert II; thanks to Antiquorum and the Monaco Yacht Show for jointly organizing this event along with the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy; thanks to you the watchmakers. Your presence is stimulating because we are all so eager to see these unique pieces which are a result of your know-how, creativity, and striving for excellence. Your presence is heartening because it shows that you were wisely able to turn professional competitiveness into a beneficial ambition and enthusiasm for a noble cause. Your presence is moving because while you may not be personally affected by this disease, your generosity and good-heartedness will help to save lives”.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco then made the concluding remarks, warmly thanking returning participants for their loyalty, and welcoming the newcomers to the Only Watch adventure. He compared the participants of this unique project to links in a chain in which each individual link plays an important role, to raise a maximum amount of funds that will be donated entirely to research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Breguet Pocket Watch Event At The J. Paul Getty Museum

I do love pocket-watches.  Shame I won’t be in L.A. to catch this event, but it sounds great.

If you’re in the area why not check it out – best of all, entrance is free!

[Press Release] The J. Paul Getty Museum announced today the loan of four pocket watches created by Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747 – 1823), founder of the Breguet watch company. These watches, part of the Breguet Museum’s historic timepiece collection, date to the late-18th/early-19th- centuries and will join the Getty’s display of French decorative arts in the South Pavilion at the Getty Center. They will be on view through October 2011.

“We are delighted to welcome these watches to our French 18th-century Decorative Arts galleries, where they will join other items treasured by Parisians of the era,” said Antonia Boström, senior curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the J. Paul Getty Museum. “The Getty’s collection does not include personal timepieces and placing these objects within the context of our collection helps enliven the story we tell in those galleries of daily life through the exquisitely crafted objects found in the finest homes.”

Although all four watches on view were sold and used in the 1800s, three of them were designed in the late 1700s. They are all from the Breguet Museum in Paris, which houses more than 100 timepieces and items related to the history of the House of Breguet.

“We are honored to share our cherished cultural heritage with visitors to the Getty Museum, and to convey the rich traditions of Paris in the 18th-century, in which Breguet played a very special role,” said Breguet President, Marc Hayek. “That was the dream that led my grandfather Nicolas Hayek to found the Breguet Museum more than 10 years ago, a dream I’m proud to help continue.”

Breguet is a sponsor of Paris: Life and Luxury, on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center through August 7, 2011. The exhibition re-imagines, through art and material culture, the complex and nuanced lifestyle of elite 18th-century Parisians who made their city the fashionable and cultural epicenter of Europe. The exhibition travels to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston where it will be on view from September 18 to December 10, 2011.

Audemars Piguet Presents Flash:Light

Interesting!

[Press Release] Francois-Henry Bennahmias, President of Audemars Piguet North America is proud to announce that the renowned Swiss watch company will be the official sponsor of FLASH: LIGHT (www.flashlightnyc.org) an evening of site-specific light and projection art beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Mulberry Street, New York City. Audemars Piguet is the world’s oldest watch company still in the hands of its founding families.

As a featured project of the New Museum’s Festival of Ideas for the New City, for one night only, the country’s oldest cathedral will be transformed into a spectacular nighttime environment of temporary, site-specific public art. The evening’s highlight will be the world premiere of a fully animated light installation by multi-media artist Jeff Grantz. The front of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral will become a larger-than-life transparent time piece incorporating Audemars Piguet Signature movements and branding within the gears and mechanisms of the clock. This incomparable 3-D projection is the result of collaborations between Grantz, the Monsignor of the New York Archdiocese and Audemars Piguet.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this momentous art installation in New York City,” said Bennahmias. This bold project blurs the lines between tradition and modernity and its audacious nature reflects our philosophy.”

In addition, for the week leading up to May 7th, the American Eagle Outfitters electronic billboard in Times Square, the largest LED sign in North America, will advertise the event highlighting Audemars Piguet’s sponsorship to hundreds of thousands New Yorkers with two one-minute spots each hour featuring clips from participating artists.

Additional Flash:Light events include:
Projection on the New Museum Facade: Let Us Make Cake is a collaborative projection directed by Nuit Blanche New York and Light Harvest Studios to be premiered on the façade of the New Museum. Dozens of artists were asked to interact with scale models of the New Museum ranging in size from 11 inches to 11 feet, embracing the museum as both a canvas and vessel. The resulting footage will be projection-mapped onto the museum, marking the first time projection has been used to animate the entire 174-foot facade. Participants range from established artists such as Vito Acconci, Jon Kessler and Marilyn Minter, to emerging artists such as SOFTlab, Chris Jordan, Mia Pearlman and Dustin Yellin.

Vacheron Constantin Exhibition At National Museum of Singapore

[Press Release] From June 24th to August 14th 2011, in collaboration with Vacheron Constantin, the National Museum of Singapore extends an invitation to discover the history of the Manufacture and that of Genevan Haute Horlogerie. The first major public exhibition of the heritage of the world’s oldest watch manufacturer in uninterrupted activity since its founding, the “Treasures of Vacheron Constantin – A legacy of watchmaking since 1755” shed light on more than 250 years of creativity and know-how.

Conceived as an educational journey revolving around the spirit of the artisans cabinotiers of the 18th Century, the exhibition is an exploration of the evolution of the measurement of time, of its crafts and of artistic influences, a trilogy that defines the history of Vacheron Constantin since its foundation.

The visitor travels back in time via 180 exceptional pieces from the heritage of the Manufacture in Geneva, in an exposition covering 600m2. From archived documents belonging to Jean-Marc Vacheron and Francois Constantin to particular watchmaking tools, and from the Genevan workbenches of the artisans cabinotiers to the machines invented by the Manufacture, the set design gives life to a technical and aesthetic universe of incredible richness.

Like an open book on the past and present, the pieces of the exhibit highlight the Métiers d’Art without which the Haute Horlogerie of Geneva would not shine as brightly. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a brilliant illustration of this truth: the pocket watch Les Bergers of Arcadia created in 1923 embodies in and of itself the alchemy of manufacturing know-how developed in the course of an endless quest for excellence. On location for several days following the exposition’s opening, talented artisans of the Manufacture enthrall visitors with some of their secrets. Engraver, gem-setter, guillocheur, enameller and watchmaker showcase a know-how inherited from past centuries that continues to nurture constant creativity.
