Steinhart Triton 30 Atmospheres Dual Time

A relative bargain at 490 Euros, this diver from Steinhart will see you set all the way down to 300 metres underwater.

Whilst it might look rather stubby in the hand department, this is a chunky 45mm piece.

It comes with the standard sapphire crystal.

Power is from an ETA movement.

An ETA 2893-2 with 21 jewels, to be exact.

Arnold & Son Hornet World Time Skeleton

Take a moment to process this one – there’s plenty going on here!

Pretty cool though, don’t you think?

Only 50 of these babies will be made (boo!) – 47mm in size in stainless steel.

There’s an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back and water resistance to 50 meters.

Movement is the automatic Arnold & Son in-house caliber A1766. This has 41 jewels, beats at 28,800 vph and holds a power reserve of 42 hours. It is Rhodium treated with fine circular graining and Cotes de Geneva finishing.

Functions are hours, minutes, equation of time, multiple time zone display, mean solar time, big date display at 5 o’clock, and month indicator.

Phew.

It looks awesome too!

Phosphor World Time Sport

This month sees the release of a new e-ink model from Phosphor: the World Time Sport.

You get a choice of orange, black or white straps as well as multiple timezone support and a reasonable degree of atmospheric protection.

Still relatively early days for e-ink in watches, which gives an incredible viewing experience, but struggles a bit with fast motion graphics such as with stopwatches or  other animations.

Nevertheless, a nice watch and only $80!

Human Time Project

Here’s something for watch enthusiasts to get behind: The Human Time Project.

The basic idea behind this charity effort is a simple one:  for every watch you buy they will donate the same model watch to Doctors and healthcare workers in developing countries in Central, South America, African Congo region and Asia.

The watches are only $95, for which you’ll get a good looking 46mm quartz piece with 50m water resistance and a ‘Nato’ style strap.

The technical specifications are kind of moot though, this looks like a great way to treat yourself whilst helping those in far greater need.

Panerai Exhibition: ‘O’Clock – time design, design time’

Wow, this is pretty cool.  Check out the Damien Hirst piece as part of Panerai’s ‘O’Clock’ exhibition, taking place in Milan until 8th Jan 2012.  How many dials?!

I’d love this.  Not sure the wife would be quite so thrilled though ;-)

Read on for the full press release.

[Press Release] MILAN, Italy, October 2011 – Officine Panerai presents the “O’Clock – time design, design time” exhibition at the Triennale Design Museum. The exhibition explores the relationship between time and design with works from 80 international designers and artists. The exhibition is curated by Silvana Annicchiarico and Jan van Rossem, with a special 8-timepiece installation by Patricia Urquiola entitled, “I mondi di Officine Panerai” (The Worlds of Officine Panerai).

On the occasion of the exhibition, British artist Damien Hirst is premiering two works, made using the spin painting technique and using dials from Panerai watches and household gloss on canvas: Beautiful Sunflower Panerai Painting and Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting.

“I love Panerai”, declared the British artist. “The watches are timeless and I made this spin painting using black Panerai watch faces without hands in the pattern of the seeds in the head of a sunflower – I hope the painting makes you think, we are here for a good time, not a long time.”

Beautiful Sunflower Panerai Painting and Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting are a collaboration between Officine Panerai and Damien Hirst who, on several occasions in the past, has included Panerai watches in his works; a Panerai watch is painted on a table next to medicines and a skull in “Skull with Watch” from 2005 and is physically present in the installations “The Tranquility of Solitude (for George Dyer)” (2006), and “Killing Time” (2008).

Salvatore Ferragamo 1898 Dual Time

A funny old brand, Salvatore Ferragamo.

Representing one of a couple of forays into more ‘luxury’ timepieces by Timex, I guess this is targeted in the same way as Lexus is to the Toyota group.

Problem is the name always makes me think of those ‘designer’ suits that really no’one has ever heard of, but sound kind of posh: Giorgio Americio; Luciano Valentinove; Gianni Versmici.

You get the idea ;-)

This particular 40mm model comes in stainless steel with gold and black IP treatment.

The crystal is an AR-coated sapphire and it is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss quartz Ronda caliber 6203B with big date and second timezone complications.

MSRP is $1,425.

What do you think?  Worth the extra $s, or not?

Rolex Leads The Way In Advertising Spend

Watch Time and Kantar media have put together an interesting analysis piece on watch manufacturer’s 2010 advertising spend.

Leading the pack is Rolex with a not inconsiderable $43million, almost twice as much as the next biggest spender Breitling – splashing just shy of $25million.

Surprisingly perhaps, Bulova took the number three slot, with an ad spend of just over $23million.

Head on over to Watch Time for the full list.

Nooka Adventure Time With Finn & Jake

Something for the kids (or the big-kids amongst us perhaps) – the limited-edition yellow ‘Adventure Time With Finn & Jake’ from Nooka and the Cartoon Network.

RRP $120.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

[Press Release] What time is it? Beginning this month, NYC-based fashion design lab Nooka is your hook up for the answer. The highly-creative and innovative maker of watches has partnered with Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), the global licensing and merchandising arm of the network, to create a limited-edition timepiece based on Adventure Time, the fun, irreverent new series from creator Pendleton Ward that has people everywhere saying things like “algebraic,” “mathemagical” and “rhombus!” With the limited edition watch set to launch in April and available for the suggested retail price of $120, the Adventure Time with Finn and Jake watch from Nooka features graphics and colors inspired by Jake, human Finn’s loveable canine companion and best friend.

“One of the most defining and charming qualities of Adventure Time is its unique tone and quirky sense of humor that has resonated with a wide range of audiences across all ages,” said Pete Yoder, vice president of Cartoon Network Enterprises. “Building on the original style, we have partnered with Nooka to create a product that is truly unique and captures the fun and creativity of the brand for our older, fashion-forward fans.”

“I am in full awe of Pendleton’s talents – Adventure Time is a breath of fresh air that is inspiring to me as a creative genius – making this opportunity incredibly exciting on a personal and professional level,” said Matthew Waldman, C.C.C. [chief creative czar] of Nooka.

About the Nooka watch, Adventure Time creator Ward added, “I think they’re math.”

Nooka’s innovative approach to representing time has become synonymous with its line of watches. The popular Zot presents a truly unique yet intuitive way of reading time. The 12 dots represents the current hour, while the horizontal bar displays the minutes, with a small window displaying seconds underneath. Set on top of a polyurethane band, the Zot features an alarm and chronograph mode.
From the mind of Pendleton Ward, Adventure Time is produced in partnership with Frederator Studios with Fred Seibert serving as an executive producer on the series. Ooo is a land built for adventure. Teeming with imposing mountains, lush green plains, accessible forests, ubiquitous prairies and winding rivers, the cities and towns are filled with bizarre characters in need of unique assistance. Whether it’s saving Princess Bubblegum, defeating zombie candy, mocking the “oxy-moronic” Ice King, or rocking out with undead music wiz Marceline the Vampire Queen, with Finn & Jake it’s always Adventure Time.

Since its debut on Cartoon Network in April 2010, Adventure Time has quickly become a Cartoon Network fan favorite, with more than 17.2 million kids – not to mention 20 million adults – tuning in to catch the series’ first season, according to Nielsen Media Research[1]. New episodes from the second season currently air on Cartoon Network Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. (ET, PT). Highly popular apparel and accessories can also be found at select retailers nationwide.

Hublot Key of Time

Whatever else you might think of Hublot, they’re certainly not afraid to experiment with some crazy timepieces :-)

This is the ‘Key Of Time’. Press release follows.

[Press Release] The Masterpiece Collection is dedicated to complication watches and extraordinary movements, which are the fruit of cutting-edge research in the field of mechanics and engineering. The appearance of this new collection was made possible by Hublot reinforcing its manufacture’s workforce in 2010 with a team of 30 staff of the highest level, entirely dedicated to Grand Complications. The first piece in this collection, the MP-01, was presented in January 2011. It was a barrel-shaped titanium watch with a shaped chronograph movement offering a 10-day power reserve thanks to its three barrels working in series, and produced in a series of just 100 pieces.

To mark the 2011 Basel Fair, here is the second member of the Masterpiece Collection: the MP-02 Key of Time.

With the advent of digital civilisation, the abundance of information has in a sense taken over from material abundance. In today’s world with all these sources, not always legitimately ordered, we are faced with a constant barrage of information. We go from fascination to concern, from joy to disappointment or to sadness within a fraction of a second… In this limitless abundance, what is the ultimate intangible object, the one becoming ever scarcer? It is Time itself. Often defined as the true luxury of our age, time remains no less an abstraction: sometimes passing too quickly…. sometimes never-ending….

What if a watch, by means of its mechanics, gave you the ability to manage the passing of time as you wished? To really manage your own time? The mechanism driving the MP-02 Key of Time, thanks to a three-position crown, enables you to “modulate” the speed at which the hours and minutes pass, according to your wishes.

Position 1: If you want to savour every second of the passing of time: you can slow down the speed of the watch hands, dividing time by 4, whereby 1 conventional hour is represented as quarter of an hour on the MP-02 Key of Time display.

Position 2: If you want “real” time: select normal hand speed, to retain “standard” time, whereby one conventional hour equates to one hour on the MP-02 Key of Time.

Position 3: If you want time to pass quicker: you can accelerate the hand speed, multiplying time by four, whereby a conventional quarter of an hour is represented as one hour on the MP-02 Key of Time Key of Time display.

Hence with Key of Time, the wearer can make happy moments last four times longer or make difficult moments four times shorter, while retaining the option to “return” to real time at any moment. Three different indicators in a star arrangement on the dial each indicate the current speed of time, to avoid any confusion. You can leave this complex mechanism in position 1 or 3 indefinitely, and then, simply by returning it to position 2, watch the hands readjust to conventional time display. This performance is made possible by a genuine “mechanical memory” built into the movement. In addition to this exceptional complication, the MP-02 Key of Time boasts a vertical flying tourbillon cage, with the particularity of a seconds indicator on its edge.
