Timex Depth Gauge Diver

Big fan of Timex’s Intelligent Quartz range.

You certainly get a lot for not much money.

This particular model is a 46mm piece in stainless steel.

Being a more modest model, you get a mineral crystal, rather than sapphire, but you do get 200 metres water resistance (handy for a model branded ‘Diver’).

Movement is the German-designed TX caliber which has a number of tricks up its electronic sleeve: 60 meter depth gauge, thermometer, Indiglo lighting and low-battery indication.

And that cheap price? $250.

Bargain!

Timex Intelligent Quartz Line

I must confess that when I originally received the press release for Timex’s ‘Intelligent Quartz’ line I took a quick look at the tiny accompanying image, thought ‘meh’, and moved on.

Thanks to Brian at the PR agency, who prodded me into taking a second look, I now realise I was doing my inner geek a serious injustice!

The Intelligent Quartz utilises a new movement from Timex, powering up to four independent hands, in addition to digital sensors and micro-processors:  it’s the latter that got my nerd senses tingling as these give rise to some very cool tech, including: Perpetual Calendar,World Time, Fly-back Chronograph, Compass, Tide Temperature and Altimeter.

Sizes range from 42mm to 46mm and there are various strap options, including leather and silicon.

Water resistance ranges from 50 to 100 metres.

Sweet :-)

The watches look great too, and the best part?  Retail is a snip with prices in the $140 to $225 range!

You can find the full range here (there are 7 models to choose from in the IQ range), but I’ve added pictures of a couple of my faves.

Now the real test comes .. can I actually track these down here in Australia … ?

Salvatore Ferragamo 1898 Dual Time

A funny old brand, Salvatore Ferragamo.

Representing one of a couple of forays into more ‘luxury’ timepieces by Timex, I guess this is targeted in the same way as Lexus is to the Toyota group.

Problem is the name always makes me think of those ‘designer’ suits that really no’one has ever heard of, but sound kind of posh: Giorgio Americio; Luciano Valentinove; Gianni Versmici.

You get the idea ;-)

This particular 40mm model comes in stainless steel with gold and black IP treatment.

The crystal is an AR-coated sapphire and it is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss quartz Ronda caliber 6203B with big date and second timezone complications.

MSRP is $1,425.

What do you think?  Worth the extra $s, or not?

Timex Summer 2011 Weekender Collection

A touch of Timex news now. The Summer 2011 Weekender Collection features a range of colourful new straps.

And that’s about it really.

Funny how Timex watches are both (mostly) cheap and relatively low-end, and yet kind of trendy at the same time isn’t it?

I’m still looking for that 80s Golf model ..
