Eco Clock

Here’s an interesting concept, courtesy of Yanko Design and designer Bor-Ru Huang.

Made to ensure you suck every last piece of juice out of your batteries you can fill each slot with a ‘used’ AA and the clock can tell you when the battery really is dead.

Press a button and those marked ‘red’ are dead!

It’s obviously not that much different than using one battery at a time, but I guess at least you have somewhere to store your old batteries: each one giving a final contribution the cause!

USB Watch Concept

A quick eBay search reveals a ton of USB watches. Problem is, most of them are terrible cheap junk.

Good to see then this new concept from designers Yoon-jin Gon, Yoon-tae Myoung & Kim Sung Hun via Yanko Design.

Ten minutes charge gives these babies enough power for a weeks watch duty and a quick press of a button reveals the amount of free space remaining.

Good job!

Smile Alarm Clock

We haven’t had a Yanko Design concept around here for a while, so about this one – the ‘Smile Alarm Clock’?

Definitely not a product for those of us non-morning people: to turn off the alarm you need to present it with a smile.

I guess it definitely would force you to wake up!

Credit to the designers of this one – Kim Jungwoo, Ju Yongjun, Lee Jongmoo & Kim Taehwan.

Mhin Approximation Of Time [Video]

When close enough is good enough, this Mhin (~) concept from designer James Tobin courtesy of Yanko Design might be just the thing.

Mhin is made from ceramic (body), rubber and metal (‘hands’).

Watch the video below to see this in action:

Eole Wind Turbine Concept Watch

Love this concept from Yanko Design and designer Julien Molse.

Called the Eole Wind Turbine, this simple idea has the wearer powering the display by blowing on the watch face.

The turbine spins and powers up the dial.

Not supremely practical (and be prepared to be wiping plenty of spit from your watch!) but a very cool idea.

Check out the video mockup below:

The Stealth Tourbillon Watch Concept

Regular readers will know by know that we love checking out the new watch concepts from Yanko Design.

This Stealth watch comes courtesy of designer Menghsun Wu.

Made from titanium alloy this model has the ability to switch modes from analog to digital. You change functions by rotating the face dial.

Switching to the Dual Time module shifts the focus to the different time zones.

In the Digital Module the user can set the date and alarm and access many other functions like compass and pressure meter.

Sounds a little Tissot T-touchy but the difference here is the whole dial changes, to eventually reveal the hidden (stealth) tourbillon hidden underneath.

The IQ Clock

Looking for a clock that’s also educational?

No?

Oh well; the end.

“Wait .. wait .. tell us more ..”

Ok, sure – glad you asked.

This is the IQ Clock from Yanko Design and designer Noh Ji Hun

The idea is quite simple, but very creative:  as time progresses the hours and minutes make up both sides of an equation.

Randomly you’ll be asked to add, subtract or multiply the two numbers together.

Pressing a button on the top of the clock gives you the answer.

For the bigger-brained amongst you, try switching to 24-hour format :-)

Great for kids or as a bit of random brain training!

Revolutio Concept

A rainy Sunday evening here in Melbourne, which means it must be time for our regular dose of Yanko Design concept goodness.

This is the Revolutio from designer Mickaël Chrost.

Minutes and hours are displayed on Revolutio’s rotating rings and are powered by a standard watch engine (well, as standard as it could be given the huge hole in the middle!).

The strap secures with a magnetic clip.

Interested in your thoughts!

Thanks as always to Yanko and Mr Chrost.

Ikku Two-Half Concept

A bit further progressed than a number of the previous Yanko Design concepts shown here, this Ikku watch from Esineiden is apparently due to hit the shops soon.

The idea is actually pretty simple, but it’s certainly different:  hours on the left, minutes on the right.

That’s it :-)

It’ll probably take a bit of an adjustment to avoid trying to read this like a regular dial, but once you’ve got the hang of it it should be a breeze.

What do you think – will this method catch on?

Rollerphone Concept Watch And Wrist-Phone

Let’s take a break from Baselworld (and reality) for the moment to take a look at Alexey Chugunnikov‘s Rollerphone concept.

Part watch, but mostly wrist-phone, it features a pull-out screen that doubles as a touch controller and phone interface.

Wrist-phones have been around for a while now, but haven’t really caught on – partly due perhaps to the need to keep them synced to your bluetooth headset (that and the fact they’re really too small to be practical and, let’s face it, mostly pretty crappy!).

Perhaps our friend Alexey is on to something!

Thanks to him and Yanko Design for the concept.
